Don't lose your title.

The subject of this thread says enough, but I'm annoyed so I'm going to vent a little.

I haven't driven my SVX further than my driveway in almost a year. Actually, come to think of it, this week or the next it'll be a year. The last time I drove it, the car had expired tags from the previous state I lived in, MI. I'm lazy. I stopped doing that until I got it taken care of.

Of course, I had lost my title. What can I say? It's what I do - I lose things. I called MI (the last state I lived in) to ask about getting a duplicate title. MI, it turns out, never issued me a title because when I registered the car it still had a lien against it. I called VT, the state I lived in when I bought the car. They could issue me a duplicate title, but needed a notarized lien release form from the finance company.

I got the lien release, sent it to VT with the completed dupe application and the check for $15. I even called them to make sure I filled it out correctly so they sent the title here instead of my old address in VT.

A month went by, no title. I called the VT DMV, and the guy told me the title had been issued and had gone out a couple weeks earlier. Great, I thought, it got lost in the mail and I'm going to have to get another lien release form. The guy I was talking to, however, found it in the 'returns' box - they had, despite my best efforts, sent the title to the wrong address. It was put in the mail and I received it a couple days later.

I wanted to get the car titled and registered yesterday, but the IL Secretary of State's office isn't open on Mondays.

I went today and waited in line for 45 minutes to find out that I have to send the title to my mommy to sign off on. When I bought the car a long long time ago, she cosigned for the loan.

Meanwhile, the USGP is fast approaching and I still intend to drive the SVX and park it in the car corral. As far as I can tell, mine has been the only one ever in the corral.

Yeah, so lesson learned. I know that it's my fault for losing the title in the first place, but this is really getting annoying. I was looking forward to driving it this evening.

Yeah, of course I do. But I store it during the winter and don't drive it much during the summer anyway.

I remember this story I heard one time. A kid got a pair of rollerblades for Christmas. he loved these rollerblades more than anything else. Infact, he loved them so much he packed them away to make sure they didn't get messed up. Four years go by and the kid who is now a teenager finds his old rollerblades and he is extatic to find them. Too bad he no longer fits into them and they are worth about $.05 at the local pawn shop.... Moral of the story, don't have an SVX to look at, drive it like it was meant to be driven.

I'd be in trouble if I 'outgrew' the SVX. And I'm not worried about what the car is worth now or will be worth in the future. I bought it for well under the book value and paid it off years ago.

I do have the car to drive it. That's partly why I don't drive it that often - so I will (hopefully) be able drive it years from now.

Please update the mileages on your signatures, Earl! How many miles have you driven a year? For all mileages no matter what car.

Well, my SVX is awake again. I took it out for the first time in a year yesterday, and I drove it to work today. I'm going to drive it for the next week to make sure it'll be okay to take to indy next weekend.

I did have to wash it. I had it outside a few times this spring while I worked on the MR2 and it got filthy.

Nick I can not stand to loose "things". I forget things such as I forgot to renew by license one time. I go to the car retail counter and they would not rent me a car because my license expired about six months earlier Turns out I didn't need a rental car. I was able to ride with some people on the same job. They just happened to get to counter when I did. Then sometimes I just sit and think, there must be a reason for that to have happened. I am so glad I did not get pulled over driving on an expired license.

So it is possible that you not driving your SVX has been for the better. Maybe you missed that falling tree, running deer and most likely avoided that falling asteroid or some other situation that will never be known.

Well, that's one of the reasons I drive it so little. The fewer days it spends on the road (or parked in the lot outside the office), the less chance there is that something will happen to it.

I understand those who say they want to enjoy their cars and drive them every day, but I do wonder how long they'll actually be able to keep that up.

I did really enjoy, after such a long time in the garage, taking the car out and having it just run. It can be hard to put it away, knowing I could just keep driving it. But I've put it away when it's had problems, knowing that it needed repairs before I could drive it again, and that's a drag. Taking it out yesterday and having it just work was nice.
