for the old school guys:)
This isn't SVX related, but it is a technical question. I have an 87 MR2. The speedo needle bobs. How do I fix it? Yeah, I guess I could have asked the guys ay Club4age, but it seems like unless you have a Corolla you won't get an answer, and I trust you guys more.

If the speedo is cable driven one of the wires that makes up the cable frays and catches/releases inside the cable housing while it's spinning. This causes the speedo to jump. Sometimes the cable is just dry and some lube (not too much or it will drip on your leg in a few days) will cure its hiccups. If you need to replace it you might try a universal replacement cable, available at most parts stores for under $10.

I'll take a look at the cable at both ends and see if there's any abby normal wear on it. If it looks ok, then I'll give it some lube and try it out. Thanks guys.

Hey I had a Corolla with this problem I would take the speedo apart and clean out the grease that made its way into the cup behind the needle and it would be okay until it filled up again It was worse in the winter and I ws going a lot slower than everyone else on the highway.
Inside the cup is a rotating magnet. The cup does not touch the magnet. The faster the magnet turns the higher the speedo needle reads. The needle is held by a spring. |
