Downshift binding
Hey all,
New problem for me and I have searched all over the site but no luck on an answer. I have a 91 Impreza tranny with 4.11 gears in my SVX. When I come to a stop and then start back up I am starting in 3rd gear if I press the gas down harder the tranny jumps into first with a hard thump. When I downshifted manually there was binding in2nd gear to the point that is stopped the car and locked the wheels, until I placed it into 1st gear and then the tranny popped and it was fine. My AWD solenoid is not working correctly and I have not checked the codes. I have place the FWD fuse in place to eliminate the AWD as a problem I drove her for a little bit and did not get her up to a high speed 50+mph. All advise is welcomed. Steve

I think that you have Solenoid Issues. Possibly a need for a new tranny. Grinding to a stop in 2nd doesn't seem to me like something very good.

The sequence is. 1st, forward clutch, 2nd, forward clutch and the brake band. 3rd. brake band off, high clutch on. 4th. high clutch on, brake band on. So if the high clutch is on all the time, 1st gear is 3rd. (unless it is selected on the lever). 2nd gear will bind. 3rd. is OK 4th is OK Looks like another box, sorry Steve Harvey.

If it was just the 2nd gear binding, I say do it. But as it takes off in 3rd, It won't help. The clutch is holding on for some reasion, either it has overheated to shed bits, that are jaming it, or the housing has worn ridges that are holding the plates. I tend to think it is the former. The 4 cylinder boxs high clutch, is not as strong as the SVX one. Harvey.

Update on problem
Here is the latest.
I have to drive my SVX because it is my only set of wheels. I have the AWD dis-enabled. When I drove to work today I would start out with the shifter in 3rd and the manual button turned on. This will make the tranny start in 2nd and then shift to 3rd but it will not downshift back to 2nd. <---If I am wrong on this someone please correct me. The tranny ran great with no problems I would place the shifter into "D" after 40 mph and then back into 3rd below 40mph. I left the manual button engaged thru out all this. There was no binding and all seamed normal. I will try some more "experiments" later today. Any thoughts as to what would cause this to work normal and the previous problems to accrue as written above when left into drive? Steve

The only thing that the manual button will do will disengage first gear, so you will start in second, and end in second. Second gear essentially becomes first gear with the button depressed.

I have not had any issue with the tranny unless I use 1st gear. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and lock-up all work fine. A little hard on some of the shifts but I think my problem is in the 1st gear.
Any thought, including those bad ones from that nice Aussie fellow. J/K, I really value your opinion Harvey Steve
