Help!! Stripped Idler pulley bolt
Help!!
As I was putting a new timing belt on my 92 svx and putting the last smooth idler on (lower left of crank), when I tried to torque it down to 26-32 lbs. It just kept on turning.... Sure enough when I pulled it out, there were aluminum threads in the bolt They must have been damaged by the subaru dealer mechanic 4 years ago when I had the famous separating crank pulley problem and the pulley drilled it self back into the timing cover and belt. Seemed there was enough threads to torque on by hand so I tried some lock tight blue. That wasn't enough so now debating what to do? 1. Should I use try to use that permatex thread repair stuff I see on the shelf of checker auto? 2. Order / install the correct Helicoil for it and drill out the remaining threads? I have heard of these helicoils but never installed any. The thought of taking a drill the front of the motor is a bit frightening but it maybe the right solution Any other ideas are welcomed Thanx in advance Todd Littleton, CO |

I don't remember having to take that idler off when doing the timing belt?
But yeah- like Tom said - helicoil.

What do you all think of alumaloy? In a pinch I bet that stuff could do miracles. Fill, drill and tap. As seen on TV

The only chance other than Helicoil's to get another bolt that is slightly longer than the original (but not so long as to bottom out in the hole) there is usually a few good threads left past the stripped ones.
But a Helicoil is the best fix.

OK Guys, raise your hands and be honest. How many of us have at least 5 different sizes of Helicoil ready in our toolbox?

I should go out an get some to be honest but I do not have any surprisingly enough. Although I try to avoid such things as stripping the aluminum block

After 123,000 miles of ownership on a 223k svx, unfortunately there are very few bolts left that I haven't personally turned. Luckily, other than the EGR bolts I haven't had any strip or break.
I don't have any helicoils - but if I need one we have an endless supply at work.
