PS rack removal
Can someone point me in the right direction to yank this baby out. Note, there is no tranny in the car. Thanks.
Stephen

I'll have to go by memory here as the SM is at home
I haven't doen this but I do remember reading it. Jack up the front end and take off the tires. Remove the outer tie rod ends or the unscrew the inner rod form the outer. Your choice depending on if the outer end is bad or not as you may destroy the boot if try to take it off the knuckle. The coupling between the steering spindle and rack has to come off or leave it attached to the steering spindle and remove form the rack. Depends on if you got enough room to move it without hurting the rubber fles parts. Disconnect the wire connector to the rack if you got a LS-L. Disconnect the power steering lines at the rack. Two lines: one in and one out. Catch the fluid. You should drain the reservoir before you remove the lines. Remove the bolts that hold the rack clamp and remove the clamps. The rack has to be rotated to get it out of the car. It should slide out on the drivers side. One thing I do before taking off the tires is measure the distance between the rims with a wood carpenters folding ruler that has a brass slide out scale. This allows for a more accurate toe adjustment when going back in. |

Thanks a lot. It should be pretty simple then, since the car has no wheels, brake components, hubs, struts or tranny.
