How hard to replace Alternator?

Does not look like a hard job. Replaced the one on my 86 Nissan 4x4 and it was a bear!

Just wondering anything to lookout for, best way to remove the belt, etc.

Thanks,

Disconnect negative battery cable.

Remove the two 10mm bolts that secure the belt shroud. Pull the shroud forward to slide it out of the clips.

Loosen the 12mm nut on the pulley just below and to the left of the alternator.

Loosen the tensioner bolt on the pulley (bolt points down and to the Left into the pulley you just loosened). Remove the belt.

Remove the 10mm bolt securing the wire harness to the back of the alternator plate. Remove the wire harness from alternator. The plug on the left near the rear has a lock tab you need to press in. It is a ***** to get sometimes.

remove the 12mm bolt that holds the left half of the alternator.

remove the 12mm bolt that holds the right half of the alternator. Hold the alternator plate while loosening bolt to prevent plate from falling.

Remove alternator.

It takes longer to type than to actually do. It literally is less than a five minute job. just remember to tighten the pulley nut after you tension the belt.

I followed Doug's how to when I did mine, and it didn't take very long at all. Now that I have done it once, it would only take a few min. Good Luck.

Thanks!

I'll go ahead and replace it this week. Still had the factory alternator at 120 thousand miles. Friday the dash lights started lighting up and the alternator started singing and roaring.

Thanks for the step-by-step!

Later,
