I am not sure if you guys ever sat/driven the orignal mini. Those things kick arse. I wanted to get a mini for a while. I like the new body on the mini -- minus the big fat single speedo dial. If I can only put in the old dials...

I need to get me a mini.

well, one of each from the list below:
mini, 72 mustang, hummer, Huggland BV206, SVX, SVX, SVX, Delorean, Camero, Stingray uh... wishlist goes on...

Mini Cooper

I have raced a 1275 cc Mini Cooper in all forms of top competition and done very well. This was a fully race prepared car with many mods. and most in accordance with BMC specs., but I still used it on the road.

I must say that after racing many different cars I look back on my special Mini as being the most rewarding in respect of driver input and the most fun. On a give and take winding road my SVX would not have a chance against that old 1960's Mini Cooper. I wonder what happened to it. ( Looking down with a sad face, as James would say. )

Let's hoist a few pints to Alec Issogonis (spelling).

He was the father of the original mini and one hell of a great engineer in my opinion.

No doubt. I love that car. They made it in 2 versions if I recall. Hold on a sec. Yepp. they did. regular small engine and one with a bigger engine for rally driving right?

I read that the new mini is produced in 3 flavours. 1.6, 1.6T and something else. Humm...

So far we have the Cooper and the Cooper S. The Cooper has the NA 1.6 and the S adds an intercooled roots-type supercharger.

If you've looked under the hood of the Cooper, you'll wonder how they fit all that extra stuff under the trunk. They didn't. The hood bulges some to make room.

Extra Cute

I like the job BMW has done with this car. The one with the supercharger really shifts donkey, very well made and bolted together.

The original Mini had the central speedo much farther forward, so easier to watch.

Auto magazines over here have elevated it to Top Hot Hatch in SC form, much liked for the steering feel and the gearchange as Pockets observed.

It would appear to offer a lot of driver's car, while at the same time not give you very much vehicle, if you'll pardon my differentiation. The Beetle was the same. The Beetle is best viewed as a Golf [Rabbit?] coupe, but I don't know where that leaves the Mini.

Trevor, surprised at a big boy like you bashing small innocent cars around the countryside!

You know, it would be interesting if someone did a lightened SVX, like Porsche does with racing 911s and so on. Strip out the interior, add roll cage, add 400hp engine, aluminium door skins, Carbon bonnet and plexi glass where possible. Bet it would make a reasonable circuit or autoX car. Any takers with a beater and the urge for power?

Joe

There are 3 UK versions of the new Mini, standard and the other two.

As the initial wave if interest dies down, the gremlins are now emerging, with a full safety recall already and many reports of poor reliability and the interior falling to bits.

Although marketed as a small car, the wheelbase is the same as a Landrover Discovery and it is wider than a BMW 7 series.

Its 'small' size is partially optical and partially due to having very small overhangs. The small overhangs makes it turn in well and easy to park, but a minor ding can cost a small fortune with the wheels ahead of the crumple zone.

If fact, it is almost the antithesis of the SVX, in that the car was designed for looks, then engineered to operate.
