Re: What do you think of my new wing?

I've started my prototype inspired wing. It isn't exactly like it, I could have done it closer, but I like this better.

Looking at the JDM wing, I don't believe it would be the best start for a prototype copy, overlapping the sides of the trunk lid is kinda ugly to me compared to the molded look of the prototype. I think the US stock wing will do so much better. From the moment I got the car, I thought Subaru mounted the wing in the wrong place, so I am fixing that and also molding it into the trunk lid to flow more like the prototype. Remember, this is not a copy, it is just inspired by the prototype, I took some liberties and am making it look good to me.

This is just the start, it will flow so much nicer once the glass work starts:

Once the glue has done its thing, I'll start molding it to the trunk lid with fiberglass. I did shave the sides of it down some, that thing is really thick, I took about 1/4" off that edge and still will not go through it if I stab it with a screwdriver. If it was about 1.5" forward, it would look more like the prototype.

I probably could have started with a different wing and got closer, but I had the stock wing already, I wasn't quite happy with it, I'm making it look better and am only out a little in materials.

Let me guess is that "glue" 143 Fusor?

It is from SEM, I don't remember exactly what it is, we've had really good luck with it in the past bonding fiberglass to fiberglass and fiberglass to steel.

Re: What do you think of my new wing?

It's pretty much the same stuff I use a work, I think LORD makes it. We make joke about 143'ing everything that breaks because it's strong stuff and sandable. I recently read a tsb for the new Ford F-150 Platnuim edition trucks where the platnuim trim on the tailgate would seperate and Ford said just to 143 it back on.

P.S. Here's an old thread of someone trying to make the prototype wing but with massive amounts of putty. http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...prototype+wing

Re: What do you think of my new wing?

I can't remember which adhesive company it was, but one of them glued an engine together with something that is normally used for quarter panels and it made quite a few cross country trips before something started to give way. I don't remember exactly what they glued, but I know the heads were glued on and didn't have any bolts.

Yikes, we pretty much had the same idea, but his approach is so wrong it is actually hard to look at. The first thing I thought about was how far the wing was going to go back, it wasn't a even question of if I was going to do it, it was going back from the beginning.

Elliot, you should raise that wing a little bit from the back, the upper panel of the wing slopes downwards from the back. If you raise it by half an inch, it will look better and be positively functional.

Take it from a fellow fiberglasser

Too late to change anything, that glue is not going anywhere.

Re: What do you think of my new wing?

I know that...

Some day I am gonna fab a lighter version of the trunk lid out of FG. I dunno why Subaru made it so heavy in the first place. They could have always made a thin metal one instead of the two layered thick product.

BTW Elliot, did you break the tabs while removing the side panels?

That shape would not have worked with metal.

Haven't had the time or the need to pull them from my parts car yet. All of mine were broken off when I got the car.

Can anyone post pics of both the prototype and JDM wings for comparison?

You can check one of my previous posts, it has few links to the prototype SVX.

Moar pics Thus far I can't really tell what you've done to it, just moved it back a bit and glued it?

Re: What do you think of my new wing?

Yep, so far that is it, today I will start molding it in. I wanted to make sure the glue was fully cured before I put anything on top of it. The glue insures that I won't have cracking issues, I redrilled the bolt holes, but they are only good for holding it while the glue cures.

Also, when you mold the wing into the trunk like this, it won't be able to breathe unless you drill up into it from the bottom of the trunk. Hollow fiberglass needs to breathe, otherwise it will crack when the air inside heats up. I've seen cheap wings without air holes grow 1/2" in thickness just from temperature change.
