exhaust gaskets

So my exhaust gaskets have ****ted themselves again. Its actually been this way for a while now. I got them replaced by a local garage in januaru of 04....and they crapped out shortly after for some reason. Car just sounds bad when u get on the exhaust. So how much are the gaskets and how easy or difficult are they to replace? I'm also going to be getting the magnaflow muffler and cutting out the resonator soon after i get the timing belt...water pump..and front seals done. That local shop told me a yr ago that it had to be heated to put in or something like that i dont know for sure.

If you're talking about the gasket between the head pipe and the exhaust manifold, it's just a split ring of metal - think a larger version of the stock oil pan drain plug gasket - that fits in the stepped part of the exhaust manifold. The head pipe actually slides into the exhaust manifold and crushes the gasket when you tighten the two bolts/studs.

Thanks bill, you know why it would make bad noises if it went bad? Ive always wanted to know. Tom told me that their made out of lead which is why they go bad so quick.

The gaskets basically form a seal between two connecting exhaust pipes. The 'bad noises' are a result of exhaust gases that escape...

Some gaskets cost more than others. The two gaskets that connect each exhaust manifold to the head pipes (part #44022AA200) are pretty cheap at ~$6 each. The one gasket that connects the stock muffler to the pipe coming from the resonator (part #44022PA000) costs close to $50 from subaruparts.com!

Change?

If it was a southern or western car they would be fairly easy to change, but as a northern car I bet all the bolts are rusted and will probably break when you try to take the nut off. You will probably have to replace the bolts.

We used an oxy/acetyl torch to heat the nuts then they come off without breaking anything.

Cool call me crazy

I SWEAR by permatex ultra copper for exhaust gaskets. it lasts forever, it's cheap, it works on almost every flange in gods creation.....

ultra copper... ask for it by name at your local auto parts store. cheaper than factory gaskets and lasts longer. look, just trust me on this one, get a tube, try it... if you don't like it, come on here and bash me and call me an idiot.

I'll even send you a check for $2, the cost of a tube.

wow, you'd have thought I worked for permatex or something.

Exhaust

Hi Soobie, I would suggest that you replace all the bolts, nuts, and springs when you replace the gaskets. Then you should be done with that part of the SVX for a long time. Labor should not be a factor as no care will have to be taken with the old parts and the new parts will go on like, well, new parts. Take care, BOBB

Hey Tom, now that I think about it, Napa might be able to pick them up for us also. I just need the dimensions of the gaskets if anyone has them laying around. BTW he needs the doughnut gaskets that go onto the center cat. the 2 front ones and the large rear one. Someone please throw those dimenions out to me so i can get them for cheap from NAPA

Tom
