What was a GTO? It was a coupe (Tempest) with a big engine in it. What is the new GTO? A coupe with a big engine in it. Its nearly a perfect evolution, but people complain because they have lost sight of what a muscle car really was/is. It was never meant to be a Camaro/Firebird replacement.

Very true! The new age GTO is just as pure of a muscle car as the original...

The problem with the new GTO is that the original GTO could be had cheaper than a Camaro or Corvette. It was the true poor man's muscle car. It was unassuming, plainly designed, but wicked. The new GTO is very sleek and sporty, makes no attempts to hide what it is...and carries a premium pricetag. That's why it can't be a GTO.

Make it look like a Grand Am SE, and cost the same as a Grand Am GT, but still pack the LS2 V8. Then it'll be a "true" GTO.

Now that would be ideal.

But what about this talk from the GM CEO? He said that it looks like Buick or Pontiac is going to be cut soon... No more Grand Am? No More Grand Prix? No more Grand Montana? No more Grand Aztek? No more Grand GTO? No more Bonneville Grand?

Grand Am, it might have a shot. they can't give away the G6 (except maybe Oprah) - sales are horrible compared to the Grand Am it replaced.

Well let's use some deductive reasoning. As of recent, and including the near future, Pontiac has or will be receiving three entirely new platforms, and an SUV...all this including the Solstice, which has received more acclaim before it's release than the new BMW 3-series has gotten ON THE ROAD.

Pontiac ain't goin nowhere.

I really doubt they're going to cut anything. But it will be Buick before Pontiac, that's for sure.

You realize the Monaro was originally a direct port off of the original Pontiac GTO for Australia and sold as a Holden. And while the GTO was given the axe by short sighted GM execs who felt that there was no future for large performance oriented cars Holden kept that dream alive, even by selling a turbocharged V6 version through most of the 1980s. But as it became easier to implement more safety features and it became technological possible to make more fuel efficient and then more emissions more powerful V8s. Also from what I recall the GTO was always a slight step above those who wanted a Trans Am, like a muscle car for those who want the amenities of a grand tourer like the Dodge Charger or like how the Grand Cherokee is to the Liberty. Plus it was not only cheaper but also showed, and the people at Pontiac made sure people knew, what mattered about the GTO lied within so it had a bland almost sleeper like out, which then became more bold and muscle car like over time. So when the F-bodies did not sell too well anymore despite the fact that in the last couple of years they did put the LS1 in, the fact was that people wanted generally more luxuries to boot with their sports car. So it was the ripe time to re-introduce a muscle that had some luxury to boot in order to compete with the Japanese and European grand tourer and had some heritage to boot. And since Holden has a car that not only is the indirect descendant of the GTO but embodies those aspects because of it, they chose the Manaro as the base for the new GTO. Of course they put an LS1 and now LS2 into the GTO just to show that it is a slightly cheaper alterative to the Corvette. And like the old GTO it starts out on a externally bland state where everything that is great about it lies within, but that is changing starting with the ram air.

didn't realize that.

Things changed with the debut of the Holden Monaro in July 1968. At the launch Holden described it as 'the first sports machine to be designed and engineered in this country.'

either way, it still looks nicer than the 'Grand Prix GTO.'

Look at the 04 GTO. Its about as plain and unassuming as a car can be, hence people calling it a Cavalier or a Grand Prix, and it coulda been the next generation of either by looks alone. The sales were ****ty, so now GM has made the hood and the bodykit availible so people will stop complaining about the plainness. It can still be had cheaper than the Corvette and probably the Camaro if it were still around. The last Z28s were getting quite expensive.

the car market in 1968 is not the same car market in 2005, although GM still seems to think it is.

Sorry, my bad. I read into it, the 1968 model it actually has the rear pillar, roofline and other features taken or designed like the 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado while also using GTO cues such as the tail lamps. So other than originally using a Chevi engine, the original and 1968 Monaro was indeed designed and engineered in Australia. However, because of all the muscle car and even direct GTO cues I still believe that the GTO and Monaro are in a fundamental sense the same. This is the info I at least got from this article.

Hey that's great. I am sure people want to invest 32k in a plain car, then another 2k for a hood and body kit, plus paint and install fees...
