Lucky you - we get a US-market Elise this year, and with a Toyota engine in the middle! Woohoo!

You may be better off just looking for a syncro, if the engine still runs well they sell for $600-800 and Syncros are rare enough that people who take care of them replace the engine when it blows up, people who beat them up sell them when the engine blows. Also keep in mind that drive train maintnence is extremly important, a 2wd traney can be had for about $100 used, the AWD 5 speeds are almost imposible to find used, and replacement parts aren't cheap. I wish mine was a Syncro, but I couldnt find a nice one for sale in my price range, late model Syncro westys still go for $20,000+, that's a 12 year old car! The bigest problem with a SVX engine in a Vanagon is the final drive ratio change, stock engines spin at 4000 RPM at 70mph so bigger tires alone won't cut it Some day my carat will get an SVX heart.

Going bugeyed over a Sprite

I had a '67 Sprite and a '76 Spitfire, and they sure didn't have THAT kind of power!

My recent copy of Autoweek had a nice article on the Solstice, and I have to disagree with some previous posters; I think it looks very good, and the interior is beautiful! It is supposed to come with 170 hp standard, and I think that is what the new Mazdaspeed turbo Miata is rated at.

I think Bob Lutz is finally begining to break down the neolithic culture at GM, and things should look more interesting at GM as time goes by. Cadillac is a good example. I'm looking forward to seeing what the new Chevy Cobalt is all about. I hear that they will have a 200+hp supercharged version to compete with the SRT-4.

(SVT...after saying they would not let the Focus be outgunned by the competition.... is dropping it altogether. After being praised by every magazine that ever tested it. Mine handles Soooooo good....I only wish they had somehow shoehorned a 200 hp six into it.)

Don,
I totally agree with every word you posted. GM (and Lutz) is beginning to move in the right direction. Of course, they have a LONG way to go, but what they are doing is certainly positive.

BTW, my son switched vehicles with me so he could use the truck to move - I have had the Focus SVT for a week. What a blast to drive! That car runs like stink! Now I know how he beat me by ONE point last season at autocross!

Did any of you see the Chevy Bel Air convertible "retro" at any of the shows this year? It had an inline five-banger! What's going on over there?

Ron.

Yesterday, I found out that GM issued a "Stop Sales" order to all their Chevy dealerships for the Aveo. That is their little econobox from Daewoo in Korea.
I couldn't find out what is the problem with it. Things are very hush hush.
It is unprecedented for GM or any American car maker, for that mater , to do something like this. Usually, they wait for the lawsuits to pile up and the government to twist their arm.

Could Bob Lutz actually have changed GM's corporate ethics and morality or are they just worried about billions in liability $.
It must be a very bad problem with this particular car.

No, lucky "us"...I live less than 1.5 hours from you.

Now, the Elise with the 1ZZ engine and 6sp manual in it should be a heck of a car, quick, fantastic handling, good looks (though I preferred the old style) and some level of exclusivity...they just can't built too many of them, since they're predominantly hand made.

Hmmm. Sounds familiar.

I posted the Sprite, just to see if you were still hanging around. I knew you'd appreciate it.

I didn't hear about this at all - I wonder what GM did to convince all the news outlets to not cover the story last week. Anyway, they've lifted the order and sales have resumed:

Perhaps it's not big enough to protect oou from the impact of a kid on a 10 speed

Sprite answer

Yeah Randy, you smoked me out with mentions of Sprites and Spitfires!

Speaking of the Aveo, Jean and I sat in one at the Charleston Auto Show. It was the hatchback, and I couldn't get over how close the back seat was to the back bumper! Honestly, if someone rearended that car, their radiator would be in the Aveo's back seat! Scary... I guess it was cheaper than the Metro (Suzuki) to manufacture, being Korean. I had a Chevy Sprint for a few years.....a three cylinder Suzuki....and put 140k trouble free miles on it before selling it my bud Barry down in Tennesee. He drove it for several years before moving up to an Altima. That little sucker regularly delivered 45mpg, and I actually got 52 once heading to South Carolina....downhill....with a tail wind!

Thanks for the kind words about the SVT Focus Harry. Why is it that when these companies finally get something right...they kill it?

NEWS FLASH....after months of languishing in my neighbors drive way, the SVX will return to the highways and byways in just a few days.

Don

Give me 5

I don't know Ron....could it be a classic case of someone not banging on all cylinders?
