shimmy at high speed
I seem to get a shimmy at higher speeds, it's barely noticeable at 70mph but I can really feel it by the time I hit 85mph, and when I reach 95mph my teeth rattle. It becomes more pronounced when I apply the brake. I think I feel it in the front and in the steering wheel, but not on one particular side, and it doesn't pull to one side. I live in an area with bad traffic, so I don't get to drive fast most of the time, so I don't usually feel it. It's been this way since I bought her two months ago. What is this (and sorry if it's a dumb question)?
You know, it's actually a pretty good incentive not to speed on the highway. |

Simple - wheel balancing is the most common problem because you can lose the wheel weights and never notice until your car shakes at high speeds. Most shops will balance your wheels for $5 a peice

Worn shocks and/or misalignment can also make the tires wear unevenly, which can feel the same as tires needing balancing.

My car has a slight shimmy at high speeds. I found out why when Beav was changing my bearings. I have a tie rod that's just beginning to have play in it. I had suspected alignment, but, in looking through the service history of the car, noticed it had been aligned shortly before I bought it, so, the culprit is definitely the tie rod.
