Maybe you guys know?

I get a rumble when i acellerate from low speed and sometimes when im on the freeway i get a load, very load whine from the rear of the car and it will start getting really bumpy getting worse the harder i push on the gas. Obviously its not good, but then it will just stop all the sudden and everything will be fine. I got the brakes checked and they said theres no was it could be the pads sticking to the totors, but i work all week and have no time to take it into parts and service so im not sure what the problem is. My rpms are between 2800 and 3000 when im going 70, Is it possible i have a legacy tranny with the svx rear end or is there something else that it could be? maybe sticky clutch packs? I have no idea. Has anyone ever heard of anything like it?

I could throw a couple darts, but I'm not sure they'll stick from this distance. Shudder, noise, vibration under acceleration can come from u-joints. Whining can come from differential gears and/or bearings (or your wife, kids, mother-in-law... ) I think you'll be better off to have someone with a good ear listen to the noise.

Hi,

Don't know what the noise is, but your RPM's sound way too high!
My 92 LS-L does 2000 rpm at 60, maybe 2200 going uphill. Not much higher at 70.

1. "I need my SVX fix." (when they haven't driven it for awhile)
2. "I need my SVX fixed." (when it must go to the shop for repairs)

With the torque converter locked, uphill or downhill shouldn't matter - you'd get the same engine speed every time.

And if you're travelling a consistent 60, not accellerating, the TC will be locked.

Look at the clues you were provided. There are any number of causes for that noise - probably the least likely of which is the wrong transmission in your car.

Don't just jump to conclusions about something like that. To date, I think Randy's was the only car we've seen that done to.

That's true - the convertor not locking up or the tranny being in third gear will yield about the same results.

the tranny is in 4th gear when im going 70, I can hear all the gears shift to 4th. I assumed the legacy tranny because of the rpms not because of the noise.

And I submit that you're making a pretty huge leap in logic. I'm not saying it's impossible - just extremely unlikely. How long have you had your car? If you had a Legacy transmission, the mismatched rear diff would destroy the AWD transfer hardware in a matter of miles. Until the transmission died, you wouldn't hear a peep out of it - just like Randy's situation.

And I don't know about anybody else here, but I don't really 'hear' my transmission shift. Yes, I hear a drop in engine speed.

Are you certain it's shifting into fourth? Does the TC lock up? From a standstill to highway speed, on light throttle, you should observe the car shifting three times, and then a fourth drop in revs as the TC locks up.

My 94 does the same thing with the RPM after the tranny rebuilt. TC is not locking up. But the car will run fine.

I noticed a 4th drop before but i thought it was my imagination, It only drops the rpms down about 200. I am running in FWD right now. And I have been since I got the car in november. When i put it in awd I get a rumble from the back when i start, then everything is ok. When i have it in fwd it doesnt rumble but about 20% of the time it feels like some part of the drivetrain is having troubles matching gears with other gears and it jerks a bit, usually if I downshift hard it will stop, but I really don't like doing that cause its horrible on the tranny.
