Does Royal Purple smell like burning rubber when its bad?

I am certain this is going to come across as a stupid question but i'm in unfamiliar territory here.

Lately I've had an awful 'burned rubber' smell coming from my car. I can smell it both inside the car and outside and when I go home it makes the entire garage smell like it.

I just had the AC filled up and I found that the AC belt wasn't tight so it was slipping and I thought that was where the smell emanated from. I tightened the belt (this was a month or two back) but i'm still getting that smell when i drive the car.

Yesterday I was looking all over for what it could be and decided to check the oil level of my supercharger (Lysolm twin screw) and it was about half full and when I took the filler screw out the burned rubber smell got worse.

It is filled with Royal purple so is it possible that is what is burning? I can't seem to find anything else that might be causing it.

Any thoughts?

I've never used Royal Purple but oil is oil and hot oil smells like hot oil. If you smell hot rubber, keep looking for hot rubber.

I had a loose alternator belt on my STi, tightened it, and it kept slipping anyway because the earlier slipping had ruined it.

Re: Does Royal Purple smell like burning rubber when its bad?

I had that thought as well and I still haven't ruled it out. I have driven it some and rechecked the AC belt and it doesn't appear to be slipping but that doesn't mean that its not while the car is driving so I may replace that again anyway.

I just thought it was odd that the smell had mostly dissipated until I took the filler screw out of the supercharger. Once I took that off, the smell got real strong again, which is when I became concerned.

oils with tons of additives smell really odd when they get burned. when I put bg moa in cars that burn oil they smell like transmission fluid is burning. I would just change the oil, a supercharger cant hold that much.

Re: Does Royal Purple smell like burning rubber when its bad?

Yeah, that is what Nate suggested too. So this weekend I'll go get something to siphon it out with and put a new bottle of royal purple in.

I'll let you know how it goes
