question about code 24
Having dug through the How To section, I came uo with a code 24-duty solonoid C. The Power light kept blinking after start-up. Seems to drive and shift ok, no binding cold or warm, but I don't really want to drive it till I fix it. The car is a 92 lsl.
My question is-will this problem also trigger a Check Engine light? When driving about 2 or so miles the CEL appears. When I shut it off and turn on the key, the CEL lights up for a short time and goes out as normal. How much can it be driven w/o damaging the trans? Thanks!!! |

Hello Teal 1, you are very welcome, and I wish you luck with your car.
First you should understand there are two main sets of error codes, for the engine or for the transmission. [there are others, like the A/C and the automatic seatbelts and so on, but the serious ones are as above] Your CE light needs to be checked out by deriving the codes as shown in the how-to section. This code will relate to some of the engine sensors being out of correct range. It is usually not connected to the transmission codes. Your code for the transmission shows you have a problem with solenoid C. This controls torque to the rear axle. Usually it indicates a binding rear drive clutch. Are you getting the rear wheels binding or dragging if you turn on loose gravel? You will need to check if the PO put in a fuse in the under-hood fuse board that disconnects the rear drive. Should he/she have done this it converts the car to FWD only, disconnects the rear, and masks the problem of the rear clutches needing to be replaced. Read up on this and check it out, and get back with more info. Joe

That pretty much answered my main question-I wasn't sure if a trans code would throw a cel. There is no fuse in the fwd slot-there is no apparant binding hot or cold,(I have a gravel drive,turned car around forward,reverse) but there is a loud howl from the rear-I was thinking wheel bearing(s). So the rear clutches binding will throw a code but the solonoid may be ok? I'll do more research when time permits and let you know. Thanks again!! |

Well, I couldn't very well go to bed thinking about this,so I drove the car to a different area. Guess the frozen gravel was allowing the rear tires to slip. On pavement,you can feel the bind. So...I read a post from crazyhorse from last year on testing for this problem so I'll go with that for now. I assume changing the solonoid (if needed) is fairly involved. I'll check more things as time permits and keep you posted.
