OK Thumper

Agreed there may be lots of dishonourable exceptions in the London area. Don't forget, meet the wrong kind of Irishman, they can be "counter-shy" also. Perhaps as well, the Englishmen of my acquaintance would be drinking in the company of Irish drinkers, so it could prove to be a survival skill to buy your turn.

I just gotta say that one of my favorite characters in Braveheart was the Irish guy. He wasn't a drunk, but he was crazy! "I told ya, it's my island!"

Yeah Eddy, I liked the guy as well.

Don't be perpetuating the myth of the drunken Irishman cliche and equating us Irish with drunks. There is a lot of research to show that we drink less per week than the average Frenchman, Italian, Pole, Czech, German, you name it.

It's just that we drink it all the one night!!!!

It's like one of my "perceptions" in my younger years. If you broke the seal on a bottle, it had to be finished that night. Didn't matter what size bottle it was, nor whether you had help in drinking it. It HAD to be finished that night. That perception led to many a headache . . . in those younger years. I think Leo can testify to the fact that I just can't handle it like I used to. That night before I drove to Memphis took me three days to recover from. In the early days, it was about a half-day recovery. If I may quote the great English philosopher, Mick Jagger, "What a drag it is gettin' old."

Yep,

Bin dere, dun dat, etc., etc.

One thing I note, not so obvious. Recovery time is perceived as longer as we get older and less able to tolerate the punishment or the poison.

What we oldies don't take into account are two related factors.

1) We don't drink to the same extent, or the same volume as we used, not the same triggers, drivers, needs, macho posturings and so on. So our tolerance is not built up so well.

2) With age, comes some wisdom, so we recognise what our limits are, and adjust our consumption to suit.

Unlike Mr Jagger, I am enjoying the ageing process, but of course I am not making anything like the amount of money he is from my "image", so I have less to moan and mourn.

Joe

Re: Happy Holiday,

Didn't want to start a new thread but, Happy Birthday USA (July 4th)! and, Happy Canada Day.
Please don't stick any fire crackers up your exhaust pipes.
Stay safe and have fun. My dog is already not happy with the noise in the neighborhood and kitty is in hiding mode.

Re: Happy Holiday,

Joe,
Going back to old threads is always a blast. For some reason, our Chamber of Commerce puts on the big outdoor concert and fireworks show the night before the 4th Holiday. Everyone sleeps it off, has their outdoor cooking and more celebration on the 4th. I guess it sells more beer and wine. Every shopping center in our town has tents set up selling fireworks. Not as powerful as in the old days.

Howdy Ron.

Glad you remember me. Been busy here trying to survive in this Perfect Sh1tStorm caused by our gambling bankers and entrepreneurial runaways. Not to worry though, We The People threw away the fine print and picked up the tab for them.

How've you been?

Joe

I've been retired for quite a while, Joe. I try to ignore all them bankers, & politicians, 'cause I'm past the point of relying on either. Hang in there!

Re: Happy Holiday,

Oh my goodness, its a ZOMBIE thread. Back from the dead again. So glad I read this BEFORE the migration otherwise I might have seen this as a bug.

Happy 4th weekend to all. Anyone want to bring me anything to the datacenter to celebrate with? (Other than pizza and wings.... burp)
