It can't be good for it. If you really must drive it you should minimise turning, especially on tarseal (turning on grass or gravel isn't so bad because the wheel slips on the gravel instead of the transmission taking the stress).

It's called a transfer duty solenoid.
Common across many Subarus.

Prolonged driving when in this condition will wear the clutch pack in the trans (adding to your repair cost)
