New Driver, new car

Yo im scott, 21 years old from Edmonton Alberta Canada. I just got my license and my uncle works at Subaru City and gave me a lead on a mechanic at his work selling a 1992 svx (luxury model im guessing..leather, cd player, all that). I actually never saw one before. but when i went to check it out at the shop, i had to have it. such a gorgeous car, and with my broke ass budget, 2500 seemed like a good buy to me. So far no problems.. it was very cold in Edmonton and i dont have a garage and the car still started great. The mechanic says he needs to fix the cable for the drivers side window so it will go back up. a cracked windshield but if i go through subaru i get a discount? all in all i love the car and would love to keep it around! im not a car buff whatsoever (yet this car has made me so interested). Any tips for beginners? I have pictures as an attachment. (if it worked lol)

Re: New Driver, new car

From another beginner; Keep an SVX fund on standby. While not fragile or mechanically challenged, it's a 20 year old car.

From a much older person: Every car can exceed the speed limit and take over other cars. You have nothing to prove. Drive in style with the conditions. It's got more than ample power.

My personal view: The SVX is a proper grand tourer, no need to style it like a sports car; It isn't one. No disrespect to the people who turn it into one but buy a sports car if that's what you need

Re: New Driver, new car

hey thanks for the quick reply. I have no desire to race or test my car actually haha. If i ever make alot of money i would make this thing beautiful. but for now it will be regular maintenance and any other road blocks haha. I actually owned a '90 integra for about 4 months but a lady smashed into me and it was a write off. the roads are still slicked with ice and snow but it is doing great

Looks nice, good price as long as she runs good. +1 on the repair fund, also make sure that you put insurance on the glass (Apple Auto Glass in Drayton Valley quoted me $3,000.00 for windshield replacement)

Re: New Driver, new car

Good one Scott! With a connection through your uncle at the dealership and that their mechanic knows the car, you've done well. When I brought mine to the local dealer last year, the service gal didn't know what an SVX is...

This forum is a great resource for knowledge, parts, and sympathy. One suggestion I'd add is, when you find one and have the cash, to get another SVX as a parts donor. I found one in Winnipeg with an excellent body but bad tranny and paid half of what just that windshield quote above would cost.

If you need one, I've an owner's manual for a '92 I can part with.

Re: New Driver, new car

well ****, the mechanic told me that would be the cost of the windshield. i cant see him blowing smoke up my ass that bad from 3,000 to 300. I sure hope not. my uncle trusts him. my uncle is the service manager there. Also, the car came with the book? also came with another book that says subaru will be there for roadside assistance and what not, but im wondering if that is out-dated and that they dont do it for people that didnt buy it officially from the dealership?

Re: New Driver, new car

Pricing on parts for these cars is based on supply and demand, so you might find a great deal or it'll be an arm and a leg. Again, this forum is a great source for advice and usually the parts.

You can try using the roadside assistance. Let us know how that works out for you

Re: New Driver, new car

Just trust the forum, it's got quite a few people much more competent on this car than just about any Subaru mechanic.

!! List price on the windshield from Subaru is $1200. Expensive but not $3000! Windshields are available, just not in the original tints that came on the cars originally (IE bronze and blue).

So at minimum you are looking at around $1100 or so installed, if you can get a discount from the dealership.

If you can find a parts car, and a good windshield guy, you *might* be able to pull the one off of the parts car. Needs skill and a lot of luck!
