Windscreens

Hi all!

Just a quick note to let you know I am getting a NEW windscreen on Thursday. To my amazement, Windscreens O'Brien stock them. The first one they got in for me was broken (totally SVX luck), so another has been ordered.

Funnily enough, when I spoke to them, the guy said "Oh, you are the SVX owner....Wow, I haven't replaced a screen on one of those for 10 years and the last one I did was a Teal one in YOUR suburb!"

This seems to confirm my suspicsions that for some reason, the Hunter Valley/Newcastle area has has a large percentage of owners over the years.

My old screen caught a stone about 2 weeks ago (roadwork) and the crack is now about 4 inches long.

I will post pics of the windscreen removal and installation after it is completed.

Mike

Re: Windscreens

Thats good to hear Mike. Can mean the car does not have to die, because of the screen.

Re: Windscreens

Keep an eye on whether they have the rubber strip up either side of the screen. Tony and I found one at a Windscreens Obrien and it didn't have the strip.

Yes it is probably one of these China ones, with no gasket, but that is better than none at all. I think an Aussie fitter could fit it with some success.

Re: Windscreens

Update:

Harvey - you were correct, the Windscreen's O'brien guy just came over to install screen and he looked at the rubber strip encapsulating the screen and said that they DON'T have it. Also, we discovered that my SVX original screen has a BRONZE tint.

So, the NEW screen is 'clear', it said "Made in Australia' and it does not have the rubber/plastic trim.

Result: I still have old screen, Windscreen's O'Brien are trying to source an OEM one or the trim.

Nothing with the SVX is easy.

Re: Windscreens

I got mine done at OBriens in Fyshwick last year, they reused the original gasket - it was a real pain in the arse apparently but the end result was fine. Cost me about $6-700 all up. Also, the new screen had a faint blue tint which matched one of the front quarter windows that must have been replaced at some point. Makes me believe they might have aftermarket side window glass as well.

" I think an Aussie fitter could fit it with some success.".
Thats what I was thinking, break the glass out of the gasket, then remove the gasket from the car, and reuse.

Harvey.

Harvey.
It's easier to remove the windshield first, then remove the gasket from the windshield using a heat gun to help ease the adhesive.
