OT - Put on your Lights on 9/11/02

Hi all SVXers out in SVXland,

Today I received an e-mail from a fellow SVXer who is a police officer in PA. Here it is:

<<<9/11 LIGHTS ON! PLEASE forward this email to everyone in your address book asking them to also forward it. Please join us on 9/11.....................
We have over a month to get the word out all across this great land we love and call the United States of America. Let's see how
powerful e-mail can be! On Wednesday, September 11, 2002 everyone in the USA who will be driving a motor vehicle is asked to drive with their headlights on during daylight hours. Though no explanation is needed as to why we are commemorating September 11.........................
We hope more importantly to pay respect to the victims of that day, show our nation's solidarity and show support for our men and women of the Armed Forces. You can help by
sending this e-mail on to others!
Remember......................9/11 LIGHTS ON! >>>

On 9/11, I will drive with my headlights on, and I hope all of you will too.

I immediately discard ANY email - no matter WHAT the content - as useless spam if it contains the line:

'forward this to everyone you know...'

...or anything similar.

Either way, I always drive with my lights on - day or night. Subaru makes it easy. So, sure - on September 11th I'll just say that I'm doing it for the cause.

I expected better of SVXers than posts about spam and lame patriotic BS. I am very disappointed.

I was born and raised about 50 blocks north of the World Trade Center complex in NYC. When those buidlings came down, I felt like someone kicked me in the crotch. Last night, I watched a CNN recap of the 9/11/02 events. I had the same visceral feelings as I did a year ago. As far as I'm concerned, we have not yet kicked enough butt to make up for Sept. 11.

I agree on both points Larry even though I wasn't born anywhere near NYC and have only been there a couple of times. The CNN recap was on while me and my family were out to eat last night. It was all we could do to stop and watch. I don't think it will ever feel like we've done enough to make up for what happened. I think the best we can do is make sure it never happens again -- whatever it takes.

Larry,

Tolerence for others is important at a time like this. While we may not agree with their lack of reality, we have to allow them their voice.

Personally, I feel that too many of today's generation can't distinguish between a video game and world events. I guess its simply the result of peace and prosperity. Kids grow up worrying about how fancy a bike they have as opposed to worrying about blisters from having to help in the fields for twelve hours.

I was begining my life at the end of Vietnam with war on peoples mouths and uncles that never came home. Then came the bicentenial and the partriotic fever grew. I remeber that time of my life well.

Kids too young to remember that are deprived of that and have little to no experience of what freedom is all about so its tough for them to have any feelings.

Doug,

I am very disappointed in their responses.
I remember the Viet Nam era quite well. Between the civil rights struggle and the Viet Nam war, the country was coming apart at the seams. The feelings must have been similar, but much more intense, during the Civil War.

I will have my lights on as well. I served my country during the Viet Nam era, and I guess I am one of those Patriotic BS people. I was one of the bad people who fought for our country and our freedom. I would do it again, but was put down for what the military was doing during that time. My flag is up every day, and I am proud to be an American.
I guess that some people don't realize that it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak (write) and remove all doubt.

I dont mean any disrespect by my following statement.

I am a little annoyed by all the flags people have recently put on their car. If it weren't for the events that were almost a year ago I don't think i would feel that way. I think it is great that people came together after the events, but I also think its incredibly upsetting that something, like these events, had to happen for people to show respect to their fellow human beings. I was raised to respect other people and to treat them how I would like them to treat me. I have always held doors open for the person behind me, or said excuse me when walking infront of someone. Being respectful to someone shouldn't be something out of the ordinary, that you just do because certain tragedies happen. Maybe im getting a little off the point here but to revert back to my first sentance. Patriotism is great, but when it takes a disaster to force people to show a little, it just makes it seem like a cliche.

Oh, and by the way, I will be making it a point to go and drive around with my lights on. Even if i dont have to go anywhere. I'm not an overly patriotic person, but I am proud to be an American.
