Oil filter stolen?

My friend did an oil change for his wife using Mobile 1 oil and filter on a Honda Civic. A week later his wife had new wheels installed at BJ's. When my friend did a regular check on the car he noticed the oil was low and started checking for leaks. While under the car he noticed the oil filter was not the Mobile 1 he installed! He claimes that the tech at BJ's must have stole it. Is this possible? Has anyone ever had this experience? Are Honda civic parts that desireable? I find it hard to believe.

Re: Oil filter stolen?

Perhaps the BJ(?) guys damaged the oil filter and replaced it with what they had?

If they were just replacing the wheels they should not have been under the car..

The filters on Civics are, as I recall, on the back of the motor, about halfway up the block. It would be difficult to damage it by mistake.

No one would steal an oil filter, they're cheap and no one in their right mind would use a dirty one. How long was it since the oil change? Are you sure the wife didn't go to a garage and get it done again?

Maybe the guys at that garage noticed it had loosened and replaced it with a new one to be sure, and no one passed that on to the sales guy.

Re: Oil filter stolen?

Probably wasn't tightened and fell off whenever it was done. No one steals oil filters, be reasonable.

The motor wouldn't last 500 feet.....

Without a filter, the oil would pour right out of the block.

Re: Oil filter stolen?

I'm saying it must've been loose and eventually fallen out at some point. I'm assuming since these people also worked with cars that they would also know how useful a used oil filter would be.

I think it's more likely that it spontaneously transformed into the new filter do to the combined effects of global warming, sunspot activity, and the hole in the ozone.

Re: Oil filter stolen?

Mobil 1 filters are more like $6 lol not $3 but anyways... If its a b-series Civic motor (not a d-series) then the filter would fit just about all of the H-series/b-series/f-series motors.

Seems pretty lame that some ****-bag would steal an "in use" oil filter, but you never know... there's ALWAYS someone....

Its more likely that the person "usually uses" a mobil 1 filter and for whatever reason used a regular filter instead and forgot. The tech could just steal new ones from work instead of used ones lol.

Re: Oil filter stolen?

yeah, unlikely stolen.. the tech probably thought the car also needed an oil change along with the tires. after the fact that it wasn't on the work they didn't charge her.

stealing used oil filters is like stealing used condoms...not likely...
