Fantastic idea, but...
I think it is a fantastic idea. However, as the owner of three "collectable" early '90s cars, I have tried to get them on collector car insurance, to no avail. The big collector car insurance co.s say they won't do anything until the car becomes 20 years old. So far as the state is concerned, California has had rather draconian rules, basically, up until recently, you could only drive a car registered as a collector (antique, classic, etc.) car to or from a car show, or in a parade. Those rules were relaxed last year, now they just don't want you to use it as your daily driver. The limits are in the 3,00 mi. per year range. It frosts me that yes, I could license all three cars as collector cars, which would cut down the $60 - $80 annual fee, but still can't get them insured as such, which would be a real financial help.

Joe, excellent points, all.
My thought is though that having the car connected with the owner gives a more authentic "feel" Perhaps no vin or milage, but manufacture date and serial number? Also, a serial number with so few cars shown as total will provide further evidence that this car is a collectible, rare automobile. -Patrick

Mileage may not be needed, but the VIN will identify that it is a particular car. I think it is needed.

Although my Macintosh has crashed quite awhile ago, along with valuable and irreplaceable SVX files, I managed to cobble this together in Microsoft Word.
I think a lot could be done using Adobe Illustrator for great gradients and textures. At present, I don't think I would worry about total worldwide SVX production, just stateside production, which is considerably less and suggests a more rare vehicle. Whatever is printed on the certificate is accurate and truthful. It could be as elaborate or simple as desired. .

Less than 3000 miles in a year? So... You're going to deny you're car's very existence by letting it sit for most of it's life?
FOR SHAME. lol kidding, I for one wouldn't do it, but without people like you, I wouldn't have any prestine examples to point at when I'm old and grey and say "I drove one of those... And I loved it." Heh. I assume your car is in simply majecstic condition. May she rest, in quiet slumber.

Not unless Dan can keep it out of the grass next time he brings it to the track More or less, I do not drive my car that often. Simply for the fact that it is not built for that and I have other vehicles that satisfy my daily grind. My car will get the occasional stroll a couple times a month. Mostly she leaves for racing events or SVX meets, looks like I may need to start to trailer her. The modifications to the car are beyond a street legal level esp. when it comes to my exhaust, it would be wise to not risk getting it impounded for this reason so I would like to go legit. Tom |

Nobody says that you can only drive it 3,000 miles per year. That would only be for collector status. You could still register it and drive it as much as you want.

I'm liking this ideal, as I probably don't put 3,000 on it my SVX or my XT6 anyway...so if I could get them insured as collectors cars, it'd defintely cut my insurance costs down...and my XT6 wil be 20 years old in another year....

I like this idea but I guess I will have to wait a little longer for my car to be registered as a collector. I tried to insure it with "Haggerty" ins. co. and they said my car does not qualify. My 69 is insured with them as an 'Antique"

The definitions of "collector", "classic", "historical", and "antique" regarding automotive society, insurance, and state-to-state registration variances ought to keep us busy here.

Our cars aren't classics, yet. They are, however considered "special interest" due to their low production volumes. I'd think any state gov't would look only at the US production stats. I know that the anniversary editions of the Trans Am qualify for collector status, and they were made in larger quantities. IIRC there were 5,000 in '79, '84, '89, '94, and '99.
Maybe with accurate #'s from SOA we can get our cars qualified. I'm not saying that the #'s posted are inaccurate, just that we'd need a letter from SOA stating the facts. Personally, I'm not interested in this, as I intend to drive mine daily, until I can't find parts anymore. For those of you that are, someone ought to contact SOA & get a statement of the low volume.
