So I went to get a Alignment

Well, I went to get a front end alignment and turns out I have a leaking rack and Pinion and the mechanic suggested to get that fixed before getting it aligned as it will pull either way . Has anyone replaced these before and how much did it cost and difficulty of doing this.

I don't mind working on my own car so long as I can do the work. They said they would call me later with a quote. He also noticed my rear main seal is leaking which I knew, but not worried about that so much as I know what has to be done to fix that and I assume that is expensive. Well, anyone have any prices on what this is going to call cost me?

around $250 for a reman rack...make sure you get the right one (speed or rpm-sensitive).

Figure about $100 to have it installed by an independant shop....probably $400 if at a dealer....

I got one from Advanced Auto, make sure you know which one you need before you order one.

$250 would be an outstanding price. I haven't done an exhaustive search but my mechanic's source quoted "around $500 with exchange," sans labor, and the listing on AutoZone's Web site was approximately $500, less a $100+/- core charge (I don't recall the exact numbers).

I ordered from Meridian Auto Parts (www.meridianautoparts.com) for $475, with a $125 refund for return of a good core, for a net cost of $350. No freight charge, with a return label for the core (negotiated). I can't yet recommend their rack as I only ordered Monday and haven't received the goods, but I am running a reman AC compressor I got from a subsidiary of theirs a few months ago. (In fact, I ordered another compressor with the rack.) I ordered by phone and was impressed by the assertion that they rebuild the racks "to order" on the premises, and had one in stock. Will report back once it's on the road.

I looked it up, and $250 is what i gave for that rack from Advanced Auto after I returned my core...but it was in 2002...

Axle prices have actually come down since then, so I wouldn't think the rack prices would have jumped that much...

With that kind of price disparity I can't help but wonder if some units aren't more "remanufactured" than others. Meridian supposedly does the work in-house (on steering racks) and sells primarily to the trade.*

Most parts stores list the rack they are usually 300 my cost which is a lot cheeper then they list it for so 250 is a steal but remember you get what you pay for.

And by the way that shop is full of **** a leaking rack won't mess up your aligenment they are trying to make a little more money. Tell them to align it any way you'll take your chances

Yes, but the car will need to be re-aligned after replacing the rack, so if you're planning to replace it soon, might as well wait.
