I guess 'the obvious' is that the damn things have warped.... down here we have a machine that skims the discs on the car, which makes them true to the hub again. For some reason they dont seem to warp again once done ( I guess a metallurgist would be able to say why? Anyway, there must be a garage local to you with this kind of equipment?

Like Al says, you could look for and get someone to skim the discs on the car. It worked for me. [The engineer skimming mine said the OEM discs were very hard and brittle, not as soft as most discs] Another thing to watch out for is the fact it could be a rear disc that is now warped and shimmying. They tend to get warped from repeated hard stops from over 100. You must be using them hard to be getting repeat problems In which case another solution for you would be to go to bigger wheel size and fit larger discs, particularly on the front. This cures warping permanently. Joe

I bought the mirror switch off him. He is breaking the car because he wants the engine for a project. He's a nice fellow, but I tried to get a few other parts off him and he has unrealistic expectation of getting breaker yard rates on some of the parts. I don't buy from breakers if I can help it. In the immortal words of Quentin Willson, "They want all the money" I have a sneaking feeling he will be putting up a number of repeat auctions on many of the parts he has. Live and learn. Ahmed, I'll PM you contact details of someone near you who probably has four discs. Joe

money for old rope....
Aye Joe, The guy in scotland was offering the parts on a B.I.N basis through Ebay, but since has discovered what the price of new parts cost and has withdrawn and put them up for auction. The parts might well be expensive new, but his look a bit 'tiered' and are, after all, 15 years old!
I agree with Phil.....we should preserve them as Subaru are not making any more John |

talk torque....
Hi Ahmed,
To add to the advise already given, torque up the wheel (lug) nuts when you reassemble as this seems to have an effect on the warping. First torque to 55lbs then 78lbs, does'nt seem a lot but that's what's recommended. New discs, green stuff all round and correct torque and I've never a peep for the last two years.......touch wood! However , he bought the car to get the engine and loom and so on for a project, so I understand what he is about. Expecting breaker yard prices that are benchmarked against new Subaru UK prices is unrealistic in the extreme. If a component fails at 75000 miles and you go to a breaker to get a spare that has come from a car that has covered the same or higher miles, what chance have you that this component will last? A snowballs chance. And the breaker will ask you for half the dealer new price with a straight face. . Yeah, right, as our US buddies put it. I don't think so. Half of half the new price is way closer to the mark for used parts. It has just occurred to me that since I bought my first SVX off the Internet in Japan, that I have bought spares for it and for my other Subarus from all over the world. Places that come to mind are USA, Australia, Japan, Latvia, Portugal, Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland. How did I miss Wales?? Joe
