Cool Re: Misc. Ramblings - The state of SVXY

I guess I'm just an old, incurable romantic (as opposed to just a 'dirty old man'....right Ron? ) [/B][/QUOTE]

You are correct, sir. However, I prefer to think of myself as a dirty old romantic.

With regard to SVXY - it's time to donate her to Ron's Church of Earthly Delights. You'll still have two SVXen, & I'll now have yours to auto-cross with. Don' need no steenkin' 4th gear to chase cones.

Ron.

Larry!!! Adjust that brake band before you ruin the tranny. The slipping in 4th can be fixed quite easily.

Misc. Ramblings- SVXY take 2

1) Sat. morning I went to the Midas by my house to check out the exhaust problem. It seems to be the passenger side gasket (doughnut shaped) between the cats and the Y-section. Midas called three suppliers and could not get the parts. I'm gouing to call subieparts.com or Langston Subaru (subieparts girl) in Pittsburgh later this morn. I'm going to get both gaskets and both spring loaded attachment bolts w/sorings.

2) Later on Sat morning, I tried Tom's procedure to tighten the brake bands in the tranny. I was NOT successful. The lock nut on the tranny would not budge. I will try again after I put some bolt loosener oil on it. I will not drive SVXY untill I do this. I will probably take off work tomorrow and try it again.
The hardest part of this procedure was removing and reinstalling the airbox. It was difficult because the airbox, its flexible air pipe and the top of the air filter box seem to be one piece. Even after this assembly was off I could not separate the flex air pipe from the top of the air filter box. It seems to be plastic welded on.
Tom, I used a slightly shorter wrench (17/19mm offset box end)because the starter interferred with turning the longer wrench. Maybe I missed something. Also, your writeup calls for a 17/19mm box end wrench and the photos show an open end wrench. Which did you actually use on the lock nut? Thanks for any help.

Soobie,

I never got it loose either. I felt around the lock nut with my fingers. There does not seem to be a locking tab on it, but there may be 'loc-tite' on it, or it may be an 'Elastic Stop Nut' type. I was reluctant to spray it with a chemical bolt losener (WD-40, CRC-556, etc)because I did not want to contaminate the ATF. But now I'm going to try that.

You need to use the open end of the wrench to break the lock nut loose. You won't be able to see what you are doing very well, you have to feel that you have the wrench on there and then go at it. Also - the wrench won't sit on the bolt flat (wrench parallel to the ground) it will be at an angle upward - but you can still get enough of it on the nut to break it loose.

Trust me, once you do the brake band one time you will be surprised how easy it is to do again.

Sometimes the airbox/hose connection seems like it won't budge. I usually just twist it and pull at it at a slight angle and then it slips free.

I also find that the easiest way to remove the air intake pipe is to rotate it 90° so that the holes for the throttlebody are pointing up. It then will slide out. Just be careful putting it back in that you don't pinch (fold) it into the throttlebody.

As for separating the top of the air box from the pipe you should be able to pry it off with a screwdriver like you may do with a stubborn radiator hose.

Well I tackeled the job today. I got the flex air pipe hose to come off the The MAF and cleaned up the pipe and the MAF. I was able to loosen and unscrew the lock nut on the tranny brake band adjustment screw. I did this by soaking the lock nut in penetrating oils, a combination of WD-40, CRC 5-56, and 3-in-one bolt loosener. I put this on for 20 minutes and tried to loosen the nut with a 17 mm offset box end wrench. The nut would not budge. I went away for 2 hours (watched Star Trek) to let the concoction soak in. It worked. However I was unablbe to tighten the adjusment screw.
It wouldn't budge. I could not move it. I also could not find my my metric open end wrench set (Craftsman). Once I locate them I will try the adjustment again. I seem to be getting there slow step by slow step.
Tom & Immortal-Suby are right. It gets easier each time I try to do it.

Ouestion: Why was the look and format of the Network changed?

Misc. Ramblings -SVXY- take 3

Well I finally got the tranny brake band adjustment done this morning.
I follwed Tom's instructions and it seems to have worked.
I drove the car afterward. The shifts did not slip.
However, when I took SVXY up to speed 4th gear would not engage.
When I had this problem previuosly, I had the tranny flushed. That seemed to work. I'm going to get the tranny flushed this week.

On another front, I tried unsuccessfully all week to SubaruParts.com to get the parts need for the exhaust system. Thurs. I actually held on the phone for an hour. I gave up with them. Now, I'm trying to get the needed parts locally. I may cost a bit more money but I want the parts, quickly.

Let's see, thats' 8 total. At last, something in common we have. I have 7 cats and one SVX. (if you don't count the part-timers that come to my back deck every night)
