how much should axle shafts cost?

as the title states what should the axle shaft cost, I broke both left and right cv joints/ boot axle. I will be paying $406.00 a peace. Is this a good price for them?

No, that is a horrible price.

Raxles is around $150 each.
Parts stores even cheaper.
Online at 1stsubaruparts.com or others will be $310 each.

I thought as much, NAPA had there stuff for about 150 or so.
Not trusting the NAPA guys here in Rockford mainly because they have never heard of my car until I walked in. I did not have much faith in them in ordering the right parts. The dealership in all of its infinite wisdom can get the right parts, but its at a BUTT RAPING price.

I'm not haveing some install them, There is a shop near my home that can install the new OEM stuff for about $150 a side he siad. So I will be saving some money on the labor side of things.

It's all part of liveing and learning.

dude, that's crazy. i've seen some shafts at the parts store for $90 each. raxles have a lifetime warranty on their axles per vehicle as long as you don't go offroading. (i use raxles) i hope you can return those cause it's a jip.

i also don't know what labor rates are in IL, but in atlanta, you could get a shop to install each axle for about $75 each. it's pretty easy actually, if you have the tools, it should take you 30-40 minutes for each side.

oh yeah, you can trust the NAPA guys. they have a database that they look in, so if the parts guy doesn't know what kind of car it is, it doesn't matter, just watch him enter your information into the computer and watch the database crank out the right part number.

Yup, about the only tool someone might not have would be the extra large socket to tighten the axle nut with, and the $200+ you save per side can buy you quite a socket set! I help another member change out both front half shafts and it took us longer to run around to all the stores to find the socket than it did to do the actual install!

Torque

Just make sure they get the proper torque on the axle nut.

I got ripped off back in may by having to pay 400 bucks for the right front axle repair. I'm so dumb as another shop had offered to do it for 225
