Time for the "identify this sound" game

duba-duba-duba-duba ...

Or is it pop-pop-pop-pop ... ?

Or maybe glug-glug-glug-glug ... ?

The typical scenario where it's the most obvious and easily heard: I'm driving around 60 and slowly decelerating, e.g. "coasting" as I take a freeway off-ramp. There's a fairly loud, distinctive pulsing drone that can only be described as a "motorboat idling" coming from the *front* of the car. Relatively high pitch, but only around 5 cycles per second. Brakes are not being applied. Tires appear OK. Steering wheel is not vibrating. Passengers are looking at me funny.

Hmm.

Wish I knew what it was too. I've noticed this both times I've taken my car up to Canada. Just on really long highway drives it appears. I thought it was my bad cv joints, but I've since had those replaced and it still does it. Seems wierd because after the car sits for a bit, it won't do it anymore.

Besides that, mine is more of a bunk-bump-bippity-bunk-bunk.

Uh....too bad Cletus, er...uh...I mean Eddy, isn't here.

Would warped rotors do that? Maybe it's doing it all the time but under accel. you just can't hear it?

does it only do that while rolling, or will it do it if you build up the revs, and then let off? (Belts?)

If only while rolling, is it only while turning? (Power Steering?)

Actually now that I think about it a little more, I had a similar noise the was all the time, but easier to hear while coasting (due to exhaust noise under accel) I looked at the belts and sure enough one was totally frayed, and dang near ready to fly off. It was the A/C belt but I replaced both anyway. Noise was gone after that.

duba-duba-duba-duba ... was from an old song. I forgot the title & who sung it , but it went something like this:

Hah Hah Hah Hah,
Hayyy Ayyyyy O,
Duba Duba Duba Duba,
Hah Hah Hah Hah.

I think it was done by Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns.

Where's our DJ when we really need him?

Sorry, Larry. When I was a DJ, we had electronic turntables and played 45's and 33's. We didn't do 78's, and none of our turntables had cranks.

Revs don't seem to affect the noise, nor does turning the steering wheel. The accessory belts should be in new condition -- I had 'em replaced about 6000 miles ago.

Hmm ....

Oh, and "duba-duba-duba-duba" brings to mind Bing Crosby or perhaps Dean Martin or even Harry Connick Jr. -- either that or William Shatner.

"Pop-pop-pop-pop?" Barry Manilow singing "Sleigh Ride."

"Glug-glug-glug-glug?" Joe Cocker underwater.

I had a noise that sounded like valves taping and it turned out to be an exhaust leak from the EGR tube. you might want to check it out
