Question ring and pinion question

I'm looking for a little more info on a question that was answered a while ago. If I'm adjusting the backlash and preload of the ring and pinion in a differential what should I use to get the contact pattern of the teeth? The shop manual says to use "red lead" and I have no idea what that is. I have also been told that you can use lipstick or white grease. What does everyone recommend?

Thanks,
Jay

Here are a couple places that sell gear marking compound. If you Google "gear marking compound", you will find a couple good looking how-to articles as well.
