Diff fluid Dipstick
what would happen if say the dipstick for the center diff were to not be in the hole plugging it up
obviously it sprayed oil all over the place anythign else

Dirt or water would get into the Dif. - not good. Is that where the oil came from that made the car smoke the other day?

I'm just being picky, but I assume that you mean 'front diff' and not 'center diff.'
And, I agree, missing the dipstick isn't great news. If it's empty, I'd fill it, drive it a couple miles, and then drain it. I'd do it a couple more times - maybe fill it, dirve it for a day, then drain and refill. (Then repeat.) But then, that's because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. That's just my suggestion for ridding the diff of any contaminants you might have gotten in there. I just wouldn't refill and assume it was okay.

Dif
My Brat actually pushes the dipstick out. Apparently the breather valve on it got clogged. Nothing leaked out but I'm sure stuff could easily get in. Just to be safe I'd definately flush it. Also, clean up the breather while your at it!

Dif breather
Haven't looked on the SVX but on other Subies its designed into the dipstick cap. I'd suspect its the same set up.
