Is it the strange hesitation around 3k RPMs? My car had that too. You'd floor it, the car would rev up... then hit 3k and pause... then continue revving. Shift and repeat.

I fixed this problem by installing the ECUtune Stage 1v5 chip.

would try replacing the MAF sensor, and the TPS. I had a problem with hesitation at specific rpms. I cleaned the MAF and it made the problem better, but didn't completely fix it. Installed a new MAF and everything was golden.

well that could very well be your problem. If your pump is bad, it will cause erratic behavior. Do you have access to a fuel pressure guage? If the engine is not running properly, it could also cause shifting issues.

Also be aware that there is NO POWER LIGHT at startup, because of the OBDII configuration, this is missing on the 96-97 cars

You will still be able to enter POWER mode by mashing the throttle quickly from a stop or while driving, just without the power light to confirm this. Reacts the same as the earlier cars with the power light.

This is normal.

I went out and double-checked my 96 Polo. There is no POWER light when turning on the ignition or at startup. In bright sunlight you can still see the POWER lettering on the dashboard that used to be illuminated.

I wonder if Subaru just took out the bulb in the OBDII cars. I wonder if it would illuminate the way it used to if a bulb were installed? I can't see a redesign of the instrumemtation circuit just to eliminate one bulb.

Sorry for the confusion on my part in the initial post.
