The Way of the Future?

Hi all, Been busy doing airplane things, and trying to buy a property.
Got to chatting to a 'Techie' mate who was on about electric and electric/hybrid cars, so after a bit of Googling came across this link to Subaru!
Electric Subaru
Just wondering how long we can afford to keep driving our beloved SVX's?
We (my Techie mate) got to thinking about modifying stock cars to electric.
My thoughts..... remove engine, transmission, tailshaft, both diffs', exhaust system, radiator and fuel tank.
Fit electric motors to the inboard end of all axle shafts, fill the engine bay and fuel tank space (for balance) with batteries, couple to the ABS system to control All Wheel Drive!
Fit a sensor to the steering wheel coupled with a gyro stabiliser to assist drive to front wheels to replace power steering (no motor to drive it!).
Regerative braking from the electric motors to assist the non power boosted brakes (as well as battery charging)

Could end up with a car of similar weight and handling which would be a quarter of the cost to run.
Might have to sacrifice Climate Control.
Maybe I've just been playing with my electric R/C Helicopter too much !!
Arthur.

A guy who works at the same company as me has converted his Toyota Echo (or Starlet maybe) to electric.

There was a big writeup of what he did somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up.

And after watching the ABC a while back about Peak Oil...I don't reckon it's that far off.
