Rear bearing questions

Advice regarding any of the following 3 questions would be very
helpful:

1. Subaru of Irvine (CA) quotes $400 per wheel to replace rear wheel
bearings on a '93 SVX. Is this typical for a current dealer price?

2. Has anyone had this service done by a competent, SVX expert in the
Irvine/Costa Mesa/Laguna Hills (California) area? If so, who, when,
how much?

3. One rear bearing supplier sells a Timken rear bearing set for the
SVX rather than the Subaru O/E part, citing more durable wear for the
Timken. Any experience with the Timken bearings?

Thank you for any help or advice you can provide.

$400 sounds about right if they are charging $75 or so for labor. I just paid $250 to have one of mine done by my mechanic (he did give me a deal as he usually charges by the hour but had so "issues" with my car)

Do a search but the Timken bearing isn't too different from what I've understood. Chicago makes one as well I think. The issue isn't the bearings but rather the installation and removal process. Mine was the original from factory and had the shipping grease from manufacture as its only form of lube for 145k.

Welcome to the site. We have been discussing this on another thread. It is not the answer to you question, but I thought it may be of interest. This link will take you to the thread.

Good luck.

PS If you have a 93, please go to this thread and give us your info so you can be put on the list in the proper place. Thanks.

I had two different mechanics install my rear wheel bearings, one charged 250 with parts, the other charged 150 with my parts.
