Wiper bolt and nut rust

Went to take my front wiper arms off for some fresh paint. D. side wiper bolt and nut looks brand new. The pass side one however, is rusted so tight that it isn't going anywhere. Not a big deal at the moment as I'll just mask the thing reall good and paint it there but it seems odd that one looks new the other is rusted so bad it wouldn't even look good on my brat. Anybody else have issues like this with the wiper stuff?

o-o-o-o-o-o-oooooooo! nut rust could be hazardous to one's health!! Not good for the car either!!

Seriously though, it sounds like someone bought a replacement nut for that wiper sometime past, and it's not the same rust-resistant material as the OE nut. For what a replacement would cost, were I you, I'd get that off of there and replaced before it comes completely apart, at an inopportune time.

soak it with PB Blaster a few times and get a new nut. you do have the rubber/plastic (i forget) caps that cover the nuts, right? if not, order some.

you should take better care of your nuts.

Interesting. Mine were the same (although the corrosion on the passenger side nut was slight), and there's not a speck of rust anywhere else on or underneath my car. The caps were in place on both.

I replaced the wiper nuts and rubber covers on my 95 last year. One of the covers was missing and the nut was all rusted. Luckily it came off pretty easy. Decided to replace both sides just for the hell of it. I also painted all 3 wipers on both my SVX's last summer. Looks 100% better. The Outback is next.....

Yeah, I took mine off for painting, too. Huge improvement.

The weird thing is it isn't just the nut that is rusted. The "bolt" is also rusted beyond belief. Only way to fix it would be replace the whole thang. It is like they used an assembly that wasn't rust treated or something. Had it just been the bolt it would be the only thing rusted.
