Mine is suffering from living ungaraged at beach. someone scraped the side rear bumber when parked the other day this revealed black surface underneath...... will leave it another month and head to panelbeater.

Hang on - doesn't Arthur have those plates on his burgundy SVX?

I know that it wasn't SVX-093 either, because I saw that one about a month ago, and it was Charcoal Grey (by far the BEST colour for an SVX!)

Jason.

SVX-092
Hey, that's my plate!
And yes, my car is Burgundy, maybe it was the car I spotted back in March;
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...012#post196012
His plate was
AAS-49Q?
Actually you won't see mine around for a while I suspect, as I've just seized my power-steering pump , but I'm willing to sit on the side line for a bit to do a better deal than the $1125.30 that Subaru Bankstown want!!!
Good thing I've still got my trusty ol' 4x4 'L', (do all SVX owners have to keep a spare car?)

Authur, could you get the pump off one of the two wrecked cars. Should be cheaper. Why did it seize?

the two wrecked cars
? Which two wrecked cars do you mean?
Countess's black car is no longer at Brooky Spare Parts, and no other left over bits there either.
So far the prices quoted to me are;
$1125.30 AUD- Bankstown Subaru,
$ 525.00 USD- from Paddlesnz in Japan,
$ 395.00 USD- SUBI-PARTS.COM,
$ 125.00 AUD for a 2.2 Liberty pump from my local wrecker
This pump has a different fitting on the outlet, with a differnt kind of pressure relief valve?
Will have to check on the operating pressures of the Liberty pump to see if I can adapt it to the system.
I had a problem getting the pump off my car as I could not undo the nut on the pipe leading from the pump, actually had to 'rotate' the pump off the pressure switch adaptor, and catch all the regulator bits
The nut on the pipe has little marks that I associate with meaning a reverse thread, but couldn't move it either way!
Questions; Is this a reverse thread?, and, is the pressure switch just to sense low pressure, or an intergral part of the operation of the pump?

Why did it seize?
Ever since I got the car, the power steer pump was a bit noisy, mainly when parking, I thought it might be the front bearing although there didn't feel to be any free play.
I assumed it was normal until last week when the steering started to get heavy.
When I checked the oil level, I noticed the oil was dark (and a bit irridescent!)
I spent all morning draining the system and flushing with fresh fluid, then refilling and hand cycling the steering (with the front wheels off the ground) to remove all the air, only to still have heavy steering under about 1500 rpm.
I decided I needed another pump, so went off to my local Subi wrecker (All Parts Are Us) and found a Liberty pump that looked identical.
While actually driving down the road away from the wreckers there was a screaching sound and the engine stopped!!
When I looked under the bonnet, the p/s pump was locked solid!
With insufficient tooling, and no oil, I removed the pump belt (which meant no alternator) and drove home with the dash ablase with lights!!
(Actually didn't drive too bad, only a little heavier to park)
When I got the pump out and apart, it looked like about three of the vanes had shattered and basically gutted the pump housing (no reco' for this pump!)
One interesting feature was a small round hole in the side cover of the pump which looks like there may have been a small piece of vane 'spinning' in the oil flow for a while to machine out said hole. (wish I had a 'MACRO' digital camera!)
I'm ready for advice, (and pumps!)
Arthur.

From what I understand, that switch is only there to sense low pressure, which would occur when a high load is placed on the pump at low revs (i.e. turning the wheel hard while stationary, and with the engine at idle)

This signals the ECU to activate the Idle Air Bypass Valve, so that the idle speed can be increased.

Therefore, I believe that the switch does not affect the operation of the pump itself....................

...............but I could be completely wrong!!

Makes sense to me, Although I'm beginning to think it was never working then as my idle would never pick up while trying to park.
(Thinks,) Have we highjacked this thread?
