96 into 92 does go!

I took my car back from the garage and stripped out the front nearside driveshaft. Made a couple of false starts in deciding the best way to do the job, but got it out without too much hassle. Checked against the 96 shaft - they are identical. The garage man was telling porkies, so obviously didn't want to do the job. Last time he gets my business!

Put the other shaft in, but still the same banging. Took it to local a Subaru specialist and he reckons it's the offside shaft! That's the weekend job....

Not yet!!

I'll show him where to put the bill if he tries to!

I've now found what appears to be a reputable outfit just 4 miles from my house that does a lot of Subarus - stacked out with spares and tuning goodies, so I'll give them a chance to look after the car in the future.

I shouldn't have doubted you - sorry!

Put another shaft into the other side and I still have the banging noise, so I assume it is the recon box - the front diff anyway.

Back to the garage....

I'm sorry to hear that

on the other hand, it'd be a good time to swap in some lower gears

Sorry to hear you still did not defeat the problem Tony.

I agree with Huck. Lower gears would be good to have. Not too low mind, just a bit lower. You would have to change the rear diff ratios also to match, but you could have a car that accelerates as good as it looks!!
