Changing the fuel tank
The fuel tank in my 92 SVX is all rusty inside and I have found a replacement. How hard is it to replace this tank? I have heard that you have to drop the rear end to get it out. Does anyone have a step by step how to?

Re: Changing the fuel tank

Here is the link to the Fuel System section from the Factory Service Manual. https://drive..com/file/d/0BxZVixvKOy5sd2VYQ2ZlbzN2ZU0/view?usp=drivesdk Covers the removal of the fuel tank. Section 2-8, starting on page 12. Basically you have to remove the muffler and rear pipe. rear axles from the diff, drive shaft, rear diff and rear sub frame. Definitely a two man job and a lift. .

Quote:
The tank is plastic, only the metal holding the gauges and pump can rust, and they can be removed and replaced through the access hatch.

Re: Changing the fuel tank

That was my first thought exactly... why? I have seen this gas tank out of the car more than once. It is a great, complex design, made of a special high-density polyethylene material that had been in development since 1983. Also has a center layer of nylon fabric for added strength. Resists corrosion, meltdown and blowup much better than a conventional metal tank. Far exceeds US Safety Standards for penetration and fire resistance. They are almost impossible to puncture or damage. Photo below is from the R/T Guide to the Subaru SVX. Section 1. .

Re: Changing the fuel tank
The car I am getting has been sitting for 10 years, I opened the fuel pump access hole and saw tons of rust, the pump and everything around it was rusted, not quite sure if I could just change the pump and stuff and get the rest of the rust out

Re: Changing the fuel tank
You should be able to pull all the metal brackets holding the gauges and pumps out, wipe out the tank and replace the gauges and pump from the other tank. Easier than changing the tank.

Re: Changing the fuel tank
A wet and dry vacuum cleaner will be your friend. You could buy one as compared with the work involved in removing the tank.

Re: Changing the fuel tank
I'm quite sure you're looking for trouble if you use a wet/dry vacuum to suck up gasoline. Once all the gas is gone it could be used for rust particles but be careful of remaining fumes. They are the most volatile.

Re: Changing the fuel tank
A good point which should be taken carefully into account. The wise thing to do is first fill the tank with water and detergent to overflowing, drain it and then start from there.
