Took out a couple of snowmarkers in my car
To make a long story short, I was driving up to my friends cabin through the canyon for new years. I must have hit a patch of ice because i started to spin out, I corrected but my car continued to drift straight into the median dirt/grass/ice inbetween the two highways. The left side of my car hit two of these bigass wood 4x6 snowmarker things and I just took those things out. I got a bunch of dents on the left side of my car and my left rear tire is just F'd up. Oh and to make things worse some guy driving the other way ran over the log i knocked into the road and he just got a flat tire but I helped him change it and he took all my info down, I never want to hear from that guy again though.

too bad, so sad
Looks like youve bent your suspension pretty well too.
I notice in the underside look that your tires have very little tread left, especially on the inside edge ... I guess you now know that almost no tread tires are the ****s in winter: if you have snow, then buy snow tires: even with AWD, an alll season is a 6 on 10 at best...and a worn one is a 2 on 10 Tough lesson tho!!! Guys
You should slow down a little more in crappy weather. I am glad you are ok though Doogie. Good luck L

I wasn't going too fast. Speed limit was 55 I was going 45, and I was following my friend in his land cruiser that can barely top 50 without disinigrating, so we were definantly in no hurry. The tires tread isn't bad, I think they should just be rotated.
I feel horrible and like I don't deserve anything. |

Track it
Doogie
Sorry to hear about your event. If your tyres are worn on one side, the car is tracking wrong. On asphalt/concrete, this will cause drag, higher consumption, and affect handling. On snow or ice it will cause the car to wander around and lose control like you did. Manual dictates tyres should only be rotated front to back. If you are using directional tyres, that has to be front to back on the same side, so don't let your tyre people make the handling worse for you by switching side to side. The car needs to be tracked with a four wheel laser set-up. Find one and get it fixed before you do many more snow miles. Best of luck with it, Joe

Those pics made me cringe. I feel for you. I was in a similar situation a few weeks back, only I was going about 5 mph down a hill. I was trying to turn off but the car wouldn't turn, it just wanted to go straight. I almost slammed into a lane divider - just kept sliding toward it, not turning or stopping. Luckily I quickly gave up trying to turn and corrected the wheel so I was going straight, missing the large divider by what i only assume is the grace of God and coming to a nice sliding stop. The whole unsettling incident was over with in under 5 seconds.
If this can happen to me in all season tires with decent traction left at very low speeds, imagine how I would have faired going faster and with questionable traction/tires. My advice: if you plan on driving in winter conditions, get some snow tires. As far as the other guy goes, you didn't make him run into the log. What did your insurance have to say about the other guy (i'm assuming you called them)? Is his flat tire your fault? |

I'm sorry to hear about that. It's amazing how even at slow speeds bad things can happen. That's why I always drive sloooow in icy/snowy conditions and bare the middle fingers gestured towards my way.
BTW, I was browsing through your locker and noticed you have the same Pioneer deck that I have. What a Coinckiedink. Last edited by DavieGravy; 01-02-2003 at 03:10 AM. |

Sorry to hear about that Doggie. If you both did not report the incident to the police, you need to make sure that you call and explain to your insurance that the "other" driver hit the log so they can't say that "you" hit them. Saves the pain of people who tend to lie to get a claim. Without a police report it's really hard to point fingers because the insurance will ask why they did not file the report. Good thing you traded info because if he got your license he could try to file a hit and run later. Although it wasn't your fault (Act of God) I've dealth with people who tried to twist the truth to make a buck. All I have to say is that the lawyer made the money, neither me or the other person got anything good out of the total ordeal, just a waste of time and money! Good Luck!

Doggie,
Sorry to hear and see your dilema. Be thankful that both you and the other guy are in one piece. Do file a police report. I know it will be expensive, but get the car fixed and get new tires. I hope it all works out for you.

Ouch, Doogie! Those pics look bad...tough break on that one! You say your tires have tread but the left rear that I saw in the pic looked to have only 1/8" of tread on it. Might do well on an autocross course but not on a snowy road. I'm sure the last thing you want to hear is "told you so" so I'll stop at that. Wish you luck in getting the bodywork back to shape. You almost got away with only a door but from the pics it appears to have gotten the front fender and rear quarter by a matter of inches. A decent body shop should be able to repair them and a new door shouldn't be that hard do dig up at a salvage yard
Best of luck in the future! I've had my share of slides like that in the past (usually due to excessive speed) but luckily avoided hitting anything by the Grace of God. They say to never go faster than your Angels can fly. At least I know mine are fast!

Too bad man, hope you get it fixed and looking good again.
As far as traction I have al season tires that are very good in snow and even on ice, i like to play in a parking lot when i can on ice or in snow to see how nice the traction really is. I have bridgestone RE910's, they are only T rated so all you speed junkies may not want them but they are good in snow and excellent on all other conditions. I would rate them 6.5(out of 10) on snow and 8.5(out of 10) in all other conditions. |

owwwie
i am sooo sorry about the car! i was coming down my hill the other night, i popped it into first because i was all over the road...i started spinning out...lucky that no one was on the road at the time. i made it in the driveway safe. i was going maybe 5mph. it doesn't matter how fast or slow you go, once you start slipping you have to start praying, because a lot of the time, there is nothing really you can do to stop, just slow down, and even then it can end in disaster! once again, sorry to hear Kelli

I will take it in for an estimate sometime later this week. I'm going back to school on Saturday so there is no way i'll get it back before then. I want to fix my SVX, it's such an awesome car. I don't want any other cars. You should have seen the look on my friends faces when they heard me. "You mean that cool little green car with the funky windows? no man that can't be right!". |
