Opinions on type/size of subs?
Hey all, I recently got rid of my 2 10" Fosgate subs in exchange for a pair of MB Quart 6x9's, and plugged in the amp to those.
The bass coming outta of the 6x9's is great, but missing some of the low stuff, and just sheer power. I was looking into to getting either 1 10", 1 12" or maybe 2 8". Anyone have any opinions on what to get? I dont need the ability for my car to be heard from 2 blocks away, but I would like some power for the occasional rap song i play. I'm more into alternative, classic rock stuff. i.e. Chevelle, Linkin Park, you know the old bands. Also, how hard is it to wire up a second amp? I just helped my brother install his first amp, and that wasnt real hard, so i assume i would be able to do a second amp myself, and save 100 some dollars having a place install it. Thanks stereo guru's

ummmm i put in 2 10" subs in a band pass box i got a good price on it..
u wil here verry little bass from anything cause the svx has soo much insulation and being a trunk and not a hach back bass is hard to hear i had to cut a good size hole in the deck to allow bass to come through . u can not go any bigger then 10" subs cause of height restrictions,

I wouldnt really recommend bandpass since its very inaccurate and can only reach narrow sound field. It is very efficient though and doesnt need a very powerful amp to push it.

this might sound a bit obvious, and without getting too technical, speakers make sound by pushing air.
two ways to do that: 1) size/quantity of speaker(s), and 2) how far the speaker cone moves out/in. You can make a rough guess as to sound volume by simply comparing sizes. one 6X9 = 42 sq in, so two = 84 sq in one 8" = 50 sq in, so two = 100 sq in one 10" = 79 sq in, so two = 158 one 12" = 113 sq in, so two = 226 sq in The other component of should volume is the movement capability of the cone (usually referred to as xmax). This varies wildly, and is frequently, but not always, a function of quality. A recommendation would require knowing your budget and amount of trunk space you're willing to part with. As to wiring the amp, one thing to check would be to see the size of the power cable supplying your current amp and determine if you could use a distribution block to split the wire to both amps. |

go for 1 diamond audio M6 12" I got one sound realy nice and not to loud.
It will fit in the trunk but you would have to make a custom boxs. check my locker for pixs

Well, mu budget is probably around...$300.
My brother works at BestBuy, so i can get anything there, basically. I was hoping to part with as little trunk space as possible, seeing how filled trunk space = extra weight, and we all know we dont need extra weight. I have 4ga wire running from the battery back, and the current amp is only like 300w, so im sure it's not putting that much stress on the wiring. Also - If i got a 2-channel amp, and a dual-voice coil sub, I just hook each channel up to a coil, right?

I gotta say I almost never buy things at Best Buy, locally they just don't carry much anymore, and their prices are out of sight. YMMV.
But if your brother is going to hook you up, I would go with the Rockford Fosgate HE2 12" sub with DVC (online BB price $199), and the RF 301M Amp (also $199). With your brother's discount in store this should get you down under $300. If it doesn't then I'd look on Ebay or online sites. Look around the web, several sites are selling the old model 12" MB Quart Reference sub RWC304 for about $100 shipped (here's one reference, but I've never bought here) http://www.electronicgiant.com/catal...oducts_id=1243 ). Then pick up a USX2100 amp from here for $125 (and I have bought from these guys - step up in amp size to maybe the 375 watt 600D for about 160 if you have the $$ - don't forget box & wiring) http://www.thezeb.com/caraudio/us_acoustics.html Wire the sub so the voice coils are driven by one channel each on the 2100 amp, wired in parallel (2 ohm load) to the 600D. finally, it's just my opinion of what I would do with $300. |

Thanks, i'll look in to it probably tonight, since my bro is working, we'll see how it works out. Trying to keep the budget low, because im saving for exhaust too.

Ikesound.com is a good site I hear according to caraudioforum.com and supraforums.com. The only thing about them is they dont give you warranty from the manufacturer but you get 3 years with them.
The prices there are amazing though. I'm thinking about getting my head unit from them.

3 options... #1 i agree almost completely with lee on the RF system(only cause your brother works at best buy... and God only knows how much they push RF stuff)
#2 Elemental Designs O series in a .5 ft cube box sealed get an amp from Best buy. #3 get 2 8 inch Elemental design K series, face them towards the seats, so when you put the seats down they are right there. (yes i'm partial to Elemental Designs subwoofers... great sound, cheap price.)

I agree ED makes a great product, but without checking I think the prices for a couple of 8"s and an amp are above his target.

I spent less than $250 on my lows and got way more than I bargained for. I have two MTX 7000 series subs in a sealed box with just more than 1 cu ft per. They are pushed by a JBL 150.1 monoblock subamp. I must have just got lucky with the combination of box space and trunk space because it seems like it turned the entire trunk into a band pass box. You can hear it over a half mile at night. At least that's what the cops say. When I have somethink else in the trunk, like my golf clubs, it doesn't sound very well. And I have the subs hitting to the rear.
