Speedometer + Check Engine Light...

Hi today, I was driving and all of a sudden the check engine light came on. I pulled over turned off the car and turned on again, it was still there. I was then driving and I noticed the speedometer was not working, the RPM gauge is working but the speedometer is not..any ideas?

I think it should be ok but I wouldn't go on any meets like that.

I'm also thinking that Michelle (thndrmtn92svx) may have had the same problem.

I had that problem. It turned out to be the pin that rides inside the VSS#2 on the front diff. It was a simple fix for me, but sometimes the nylon gear inside the diff wears down and the VSS stops spinning losing the speedo and throwing a code for VSS#2.

If it is the nylon gear, if you do not fix it soon, the worn off gear parts will damage your front diff.

Remove the VSS#2 and see if the pin is broken. If it is not broken, jack up the car, put it in neutural, manually turn the wheels and look down where the VSS#2 was and you should be able to see it turn. If it turns, your VSS is shot, if it doesn't then your diff gear is shot.

well this is what happened this morning, the check engine light was on for the first 2-3 mins the car was on, then it went off and then the speedo started to work. Then it stopped, then it did and stopped again, check engine lite is still off tho.

If it is intermittent, it is not the sensor shaft. It is either the gear inside the diff (bad and expensive) or the sensor.

There is an electrical diagnostics procedure in the manual for testing the sensor with a normal voltmeter. I do not have my manuals handy, hopefully someone else does. It is under the transmission section.

well now it's working fine, drove for an hour and it has not stopped working..

is there some kind of connection or something that could be loose?

beacause my friend told me he has the same problem in his dodge caravan and all he had to do was to change a cable that was under the car and it cost $30-$40

The SVX does not have a cable. It is all electronic.

It sounds like either the connector on the VSS#2 is loose or the sensor itself is going bad.

Hopefully someone can get you the diag procedure. Otherwise you'll have to wait until next week for me to post it.

The VSS#2 is on the front differential just in front of the dipstick.

If you take off the black intake tube, it will be a lot easier to get to. Just don't forget where the half dozen or so hoses connected to the intake tube.
