OT: home computer question...

ok, just to clarify, I am by no means a computer expert, with that, i have, im sure, an easy question for u guys, i have an old POS home computer, and just installed windows2000, and i want and need to upgrade my RAM, but ive searched online and it confuses me on which to buy, and what size limits i have to pick that can be installed on THIS computer, as it stands, its only a 533mhz, with 64 mb of ram, if im not mistaken, can i not upgrade it anymore then 128???? for this paticular computer, it seems to be that way, its a HP Pavillion 6635...please advise me on how big this computer will take, and the best(cheapest) place to get it, i will really appreciate it, thanks guys!!

I'm not 100 percent on this but I would say that at the time you would have got your 533 the memory being used was pc100 (168pin)sdram. and you should be able to use 128mb sticks possibly 256 but 128 is a safe bet. Now the hp packs them in pretty tight but i'm almost positive youre mobo has 3 dimms so I'd say at a minimum you can get 3 128mb sticks or 384 mb of ram. you can buy that at staples for around 75$ total and you can probably find it on line chheaper at crucials site. going from 64mb to 384 will make a huge diff.
As far as the the win2000 goes your always better off doing a clean install and not a upgrade, upgrades just always seem to be problem ridden
As a side note you can buy pc133 ram and run it in your computer. but don't mix memory sometimes it works sometimes it causes problems.
Now this information is generic but should get you on the right path. any decent online memory retailer can look up your pc and tell you exactly how much memory you can use and what kind.

Yes I work in IT but no I don't fricken like Star Trek.

Here's my 2 cents worth:

If it's a 533 it is likely a Celeron and, depending on if it's the last of the 1st generation models or the first of the 2nd generation models, it will use at best a 100mhz fsb. PC100 memory will definitely be enough. My bet is it has only 2 memory slots and will only handle low density RAM. Most 256mb sticks these days are high density and will only register as 128 on an older pc (like it does on mine) so it would be a waste to get that. Best bet is to go with 2 sticks of 128mb PC100. Go with Crucial memory (http://www.crucial.com) since it is one of the highest quality brands available and has a lifetime warranty. The prices on their site are competetive or lower than most places.

Since you are probably not an avid gamer, 256mb of RAM will be plenty enough to run W2K and whatever else you are likely to throw at it. And like Shane said..."Get back to work on those doors!!!".
