Alternator/Ground wiring upgrade.
I just did it for ****s and giggles but it turns out to help a lot. My lights are noticably brighter and my Stereo has a little more stamina when cranked. It is great. Woulda been a 5 minutes job too...but I dropped the Air-Con-Compressor bolt into the engline compartment and spent about 30 minutes fishing it out...it sucked. Check my locker for pics, they are great.

glad it improved your setup.
if I could make one suggestion??? I think stinger or somebody like that makes a battery post that handles two 4 gauge wires, with one having a 100 amp fuse. Run the stock alternator wire into the "un-fused" side (since it already has a fusible link), and the upgraded wire (and maybe your amp) into the fused side. This will eliminate any possible electrical shorts - which could in theory burn up your wiring harness. Alternately, you can get an inline fuse from most any stereo shop and put it between the alternator and battery. Lots of people on this forum have done what you did with no adverse effects, and they have had it in place for a long time. So, maybe I'm just overly cautious, but then again in years gone by I've helped replace burnt wiring harnesses too. If you think the transmission rebuild labor is expensive, ask for a quote to replace the wiring. |

I completely understand and appreciate that comment. I can not afford to get the Battery Post( starving college student ) but I have an old inline fuse-box with a 95 amp Fuse I am hoping to put in this week. I think that will prevent most problems. Also, My 4 guage to amp will be fused as well. One thing though, What is a good place to put the fuses? A good mounting place. Easily accessable, looks good, and preferably without drilling any major holes. I appreciate that you are detailed with your posts.

I posted this site once upon a time. It's still a good place to review car audio with particular attention to the fuse section:
http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/caraudio.htm I have been told the preferred position for a fuse is within a foot of the power source. That's kinda common sense in a way. Imagine you have a wire looped around enough to be say 100 feet long. It would be a lot better to put the fuse in the first foot vice the last. |
