Strange thing happened (JDM Alcyone)

Was out in the car last night, it was cold and damp, car was driving ok, after about 10 minutes driving I was indicating at a roundabout, the 4 wheel steer light on the dash started flashing in harmony with the blinkers, and an audible clicking noise was coming from inside the boot (trunk) similar noise to a flasher relay. When I stopped indicating the 4WS light went out, and the noise stopped, I tried left and right indicators the (4WS) light flashed. Car drove and handled normally. The journey was about 40 minutes, it didn't do it all the time. On the return journey it wasn't as bad but still did it.
Any ideas? dampness?, faulty flasher unit? dash cluster? I can't think why the 4WS system and indicators would be connected/related.

ps The control unit for the 4WS is in the boot under the parcel shelf, I know this because I have had to change it when it put the 4WS light on, and stayed on.
