Sadly I'll have to agree with what the porkhaus boy said times 2. Before wasting time polishing I'd be doing some tire swaps (maybe even 4 new if your best tire show much wear at all) to get matching shoes and change the tranny fluid. There is always time for polishing, like when you retire like John! Might also want to make throw a virgin in the burnt tranny fluid to please the tranny gods while your at it

Re: My new Black one with the polished rims

i didn't check to see who made the original post, but with the OP being a member here since 2002, this should be common knowledge.

i got a sidewall tear on a set of Conti's with about 3000 miles on them and bought 4 new ones.

if you can find a shop that shaves tires, buy two same model tires and have them shaved to match two of the ones currently on the vehicle ....
or save that money for a new transmission.

Re: My new Black one with the polished rims

Wouldn't measuring tire circumference to verify, and shaving if not the same, be sufficient?

I also wonder, in my blissful ignorance, why front to back really matters. Isn't the AWD system designed to transfer power to the slower moving wheels? This being OK as long as they are the rear ones since it it front biased?

Re: My new Black one with the polished rims

Wow you guys. I've owned 3 dozen AWD Subarus in my time and i've known that the whole time. I've had a matching set of tires only a handful of times. As long as the size are same and the tread wear is close, I haven't worried about it and I won't start now because I've never had an issue. I do about 3 or 4 tranny swaps a year so if I did have a problem, it's no big deal. I think there are other things more important to worry about.

Re: My new Black one with the polished rims

Just out of curiosity, how do the little "laser cut" caps secure onto the wheel? I have black chrome oe wheels on my '97, and have not had much success getting my center caps to even remotely match. Tried a 2-step spray process with some improvement, but not really successful, due, I believe, to being plastic. To previous suggestion, "just paint the center-caps black", !!

Any way that you can. Some type of adhesive that sets up without being too thick. They look bad unless they sit flush. Maybe put a screw on each of the 5 spoke ends with a countersunk flathead might not look too bad. But it doesn't look too hard to make the caps sit more inward.

And No kidding about the black. :0

Re: My new Black one with the polished rims

Silver or black paint on the center caps, no matter how well done, will fall short in appearance when next to polished chrome. Your eye will be attracted to the dullness of the center cap and away from the brightness of the chrome wheel.

If this were my car, I would consider sending my center caps out to be chrome plated THIS CAN BE DONE. While it would not match the color ofyour black chrome, it would definitely provide the bright accent to the center caps. Our center caps are rigid enough to take this pocess.

It would have the similar finish and look as it was meant to be that way.

Calchrome also offers a unique procedure that can be performed to your OE silver painted caps called electroless chrome coating. This chrome-nylike finish mimics the reflective properties of chrome and is ideal for specialized applications. Pricing starts at $35 per cap.

Or do a search on chrome plating plastic.

Re: My new Black one with the polished rims

I "polished" them once more and they turned into Maxima rims .....I Plasti dipped them white and I didn't think I would like it, but it's growing on me.

So the chrome rims/tires are for sale in that forum.

Yeah that's pretty clever, putting metal onto the plastic and then plating the metal.
