Rejoining the flock

I just purchased my 4th SVX ... a lovely 1996 Bordeaux LSi with 122k mi. She needs a bit of care but nothing too dramatic. I am having an odd coolant issue I could use some advice on, if someone is willing. I will supply details if anyone replies. Enjoy the pics below

Re: Rejoining the flock

Sarcasm Noted..the only coolant related problem I've ever had with my previous SVXs was radiator replacement.. this one is new.. it seems to trap all the coolant in the overflow.. i replaced the cap and hoses... next is the thermostat.. and pressure check

This one is NOT new, but I don't want to be the first to say it without more info.

The coolant reservoir continues to fill up and not go back down?

Could be as simple as a clogged overflow bottle which would let the radiator pump fluid into the reservoir, but not let it return to the radiator when cold.

How is your temperature gauge acting? Especially at lower RPMs and MPH after driving at highway speeds for a while.

Some of the information that would help in any coolant issue is;

Is the car overheating?

Are both of the electric radiator fans working?

Is the top radiator too hot to keep your hand on?

Is the bottom radiator hose cold when the top hose is hot?

When you squeese the upper rad hose when the engine is cold,
does the coolant rush into the over flow?

Re: Rejoining the flock

I am sorry.. let me clarify.. when i said "new" i meant new to me... hence my asking the forum, in their infinite wisdom, for guidance and insight. If i needed to be berated for asking a question i'd check with my local Pepboys mechanic. As far as the behavior ... it air locks the radiator.. the coolant gets warm, it expands in volume, flows into the overflow tank, and stays there. i have replaced the radiator cap in a quick futile effort to possibly resolve. when it traps the coolant the rad cap is cool to the touch and can be opened, i allow the coolant to then flow back into the radiator and all is well for a period of time until it decides to do it again. on a road trip (had to get home) it lasted 300ish miles before needing to stop for gas and allowing the coolant to flow back into the radiator. the radiator and hoses are new, the 120k mi service was just performed. and yes the fans are working as they should.

I have nothing to add but a suggestion to change your username, Moron.

And why does your signature look better than mine?

Re: Rejoining the flock

pressure test the cap and see if it is reading proper lbs which I think is 13? I've had several BAD caps in a row from subaru.

Re: Rejoining the flock

tried another new cap today.. same issue persists.. though i can drive for an extended period around town without issue.. im leaning toward replacing the thermostat? any thoughts.. and the bearings? is entire hub replacement easier?
