Re: JDM driveline swap

For reference you will be glad you sent the axles back and swapped the carrier, the 06 WRX shafts would not have worked for you if the STi shafts have the same hub end as the SVX, which they do. And on the left side shaft of the SVX the diff end retains the c-clip unlike the newer symmetrical shafts which have the c-clip retained in the diff.

SVX rear axleshafts

SVX compared to 05+ STi hub end (identical)

SVX compared to 05+ STi diff end (very different)

Re: JDM driveline swap

well...technically the picture that would really show the incompatability would be one of a wrx hub end next to an sti hub end or svx hub end

I believe you none the less.

Anyway, I'm happy with the decision. I should have taken a picture of the svx vlsd next to th wrx vlsd for others to see the huge difference in the # of plates. The svx vlsd has to have 8 to 10 times as many plates in it.

So...everything is still good with the jdm driveline swap. There are no unmentioned issues or little ideosyncrasies needing to be ironed out. Everything works perfectly.

Re: JDM driveline swap

Thanks,

Would WRX guys have any interest in a 3.545 r160 with a wrx vlsd in it?

Re: JDM driveline swap

The 02-03 WRX definitely and most of the other years actually already have 3.54 R160s in them. Although they do go bad sometimes on them and need to replaced.

Most of the WRX 5MTs came with the 3.90 front ratio and the 1.1:1 center diff requiring a 3.54 rear diff.

This used to be true but time has changed that. In 06 they changed the center diff in the 5mt to 1:1 and changed to 3.9 diffs. This is the WRX line only.

Re: JDM driveline swap

It would be worth it for someone that has blown up theirs sure. I know of one person that had to replace it due to whatever reason causing it to fail.

Re: JDM driveline swap

I think it might be worth it. This will come in handy to a newer WRX owner doing a 6 speed swap that doesn't want to fuss about with changing the differential and axles and such with parts that go along with an R180 swap on those cars.

Re: JDM driveline swap

I'll ask around for you. So it's basically a stock bugeye WRX R160 right? WRX housing and carrier with 3.54?

Re: JDM driveline swap

It's the differential out of my SVX with the WRX vlsd and bearing retainers (which a lot of people call side plates) and shims swapped into it.

A and B were zero (no number stamped) on both the SVX and WRX cases so swapping the carrier with the shims and bearing retainers as a matched set was the correct way to set up both diffs. I can put gear matching compound on the ring and double check the contact pattern if it makes a potential buyer more comfortable and I can leave it on so they can see the contact pattern for themselves when they get it.

They will need to purchase a new cover gasket to close it back up.

What do you think would be a fair price? I can list it on nasioc.
