This was my set up, the air filter sits about 6 inches below the opening in the fender and about a foot above the inner fender shielding which keeps water and debris away from it.

one of the first things i did when i bought my car was throw out the k&n. i have been inside lots of engines and there is a correlation between a k&n filter and the amount of scoring you see on cam/crank surfaces and bearings.

Ditto! I replaced mine with an AC Delco filter which, after ingesting some debris, actually flows better than the K&N. The K&N only flows better when it is newly cleaned but the flow drops quickly as it picks up debris. It isn't worth the extra crap the engine will ingest.

Re: Stock intake vs. Cold Air and hood scoop

Not to mention the chance of contaminating the MAF if you oil the K&N. Removing the resonator under the fender will make "power" intake noises and still retain the factory CAI effect.

Re: Stock intake vs. Cold Air and hood scoop

I have my intake silencer removed, the plastic crap in the fender.
Everything is stock under the hood.
If your just looking for noise, this will do it.

Here is a video sound clip:
