Stock cdplayer

Like a lot of you, who have or had stock cd players, mine began to skip, stop, and shuffle around without ryme or reason. It worked fine at first but after twenty minutes or so, it began to act up. One thing I noticed is that when I ejected the cd it was hot, so since I'm cheap and had some time on my hands I opened it up and with a magnifying glass I looked at all the solder joints to see if any were old and could cause all these problems as they got hot. Several solder points needed resoldered. Since then, it seems to work fine. It still gets hot, too hot I think, but so far so good.

Good idea. I think I'll take mine apart and check it out. If this fixes it no one is allowed to tell Kim or she will make me return the new stereo.

Interesting that you say that since I am having the same problem! it skips after about 20 minutes use and, especially with the lights on, the cd and the surrounding area are very very hot!

Which parts were you soldering???

Thanks

james

Yeah, I have one sitting in my garage that needs that magic touch. It was the original, in my first SVX, I bought a replacement "Set" of tuner/cd unit from a nice young fella who sold it to me for . . . hold on to you hats . . . $10.00!! Which was the cost of shipping. The replacement unit has worked flawlessly. I wonder if finding a small cpu fan would work in keeping the unit warm.

I was giving it some more thought and a fellow with a 1995 green (the one in my locker from the 3 SVX meet up last weekend) said that one of the arms in his cd player broke and no longer took cd's....perhaps warped rather than broke?? The heat is quite significant!

Ah well, means a nice Denon or Macintosh unit can go in...oh..that's right, I forgot about the tranny/visor/window switch fund!

Are any of the buttons on the original CD player supposed to be lighted ('92 LSL)? The only one that illuminates on mine is the eject button. There are a few on the radio that aren't on either.

Is there any way to replace the bulbs (or whatever's in there)?

Yes, all the buttons are supposed to be illuminated. On the CD player, it'll be a little easier. The panel that holds the lights and such (after you remove the face) just unplugs. The lights are soldered into the board. You'll have to unsolder the light socket, replace the bulb, then, re-solder the socket.

Unfortunately, the radio is the same way, however the circuit board is soldered into the unit. If you're very good with a soldering iron, you may be able to pull it off. I will likely give it a try on my spare unit, since the lights are beginning to go away in the radios in both my SVXes. The rotton thing is, that in one of them, one half of the lights work, and in the other one, the OTHER half of the lights work (on the radio). If I could just combine them, I'd be set.

My problem with my stock unit, is the bass and treble seems to be completly out of control in my rear speakers.

One side sounds like bass is on at highest all the tiem, the other side seems too trebly.

I'm hoping replacing the player with an aftermarket will fix it; if its the wring, I really dread pulling panels to get at it....

lights

My light that illuminates the track window went out, I replaced it at the same time I resoldered the main board with an identical light from a Legacy radio I had stashed in the basement. Still running fine, but still gets hot.

Put 'em together in a room, dim the lights, play a little soft music, and maybe in a few months you'll have a third one where everything works (or maybe one where NOTHING does).

Dick, you're beginning to frighten me. You're almost as much of a wiseaker as I am. Stands to reason, though. We may be related. I have the surname Young in my family tree.

(Yes, y'all. even though I'm from Kentucky, my family tree DOES fork. )

Randy, coming from you, I take that as a compliment. I'm new to the SVX and this forum, so I can't offer too much in the way of technical advice. I'm making up for that lack by submitting opinions and smart remarks. Like elbows or other favorite body parts, everybody's got some.

Unfortunately, I'm as skilled at soldering as I am at growing hair on my head (but why did it migrate to my back and ears?). I may look around for someone who'd be willing to do that for a decent price, or perhaps just practice, practice, practice until I can do it myself.
