FWD 5 spd

is it possible to do a 5 spd for a fwd svx or would it just be a waste of time?
what is a VTD trans.?

and what do the gear numbers for exactly, what does it mean?

Re: FWD 5 spd

5 spd fwd in an SVX, yes, pretty much a waste of time for the amount of effort. Might as well spend the extra 5 hours (or less) finding and putting in a driveshaft, rear diff and axles.

VTD= Variable Torque distribution if I remember off the top of my head. Found only in some Automatic JDM Subaru's and a few other markets in up to 98/99's and on most (possibly all?) Subaru auto's after that. Basically it is an advanced active type AWD setup. (well, advanced at the time Subaru first released it)

(other manufacturers also have VTD type systems, it is not limited to Subaru)

What do you mean by gear numbers? The final drive gear ratios are 3.545, 3.70, 3.90, 4.11 and 4.44 are the most common on Subaru's

Re: FWD 5 spd

Yea the final drive ratio what is it? And why is having more better?
and about the awd conversion
would there be a way to switch back and forth to fwd and awd cause i know the fwd version gets better milage. And will there be any ill effects if its possible?
How much does a fwd converson to awd cost cause if it gets expensive i might just go the rout of just buying an awd lsi model...

Re: FWD 5 spd

I would never call a mod or change a person wanted to make to their car "worthless". I see no reason why the OP couldn't swap in a FWD 5MT into his SVX providing that it is similar to the common AWD 5MT swap.

I say go for it, we need more people leading instead of following. Same goes for the EJ25t swap.. if I hear the SVX is too heavy one more time I am gonna sock someone right in the nose! And then do the swap to prove them all wrong!

Re: FWD 5 spd

I too think it would be fine with a FWD 5-Speed in it.....and much easier to do then an AWD 5-Speed...no drive shaft to mess with, no rear diff to set-up....

Re: FWD 5 spd

I never said it was worthless, I said you might as well spend the extra bit of time and do the extra AWD stuff, but that's just me. If he's looking at better gas mileage and not worried about off the line performance and all weather capabilities, fwd 5 spd is just fine.

The higher the final drive ratio, means that it will have more torque at lower RPMs (better acceleration) and (theoretically) a lower top speed.

You can't really switch back and forth from AWD to 2wd. Theoretically you could by removing the driveshaft, but it's probably best just to do what you like.

VTD was first introduced in the Euro version of the SVX that was sold in Aust. NZ, UK, Japan, and other various non US markets, 91 to 97. It was also used in the Liberty/Legacy RS Turbo of 92.

Other manufacturers such as GM use the Subaru VTD under license. It was solely Subaru's design, and still the best.

Credit where credits due.

Harvey.
