rpm gauge

my rpm gauge stop working. how does it work. does it work on vaccum or sensor. can anyone help

I have been trying to find an answer to where the pick up is also. I bought a replacement guage cluster in case it is the guage. Also heard the soldered connections on the back of the guage might be broken.
