Re: down shifting at 80 mph
Having the tps out of spec will cause gear hunting. There is a how-to here that shows how to check/adjust it. I would start there.

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
Are you sure it's a downshift and not just the torque converter unlocking?
I agree with Cam, if it is downshifting, TPS is the first place to check. Also might want to check the tranny fluid level.

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
I check the tranny fluid level every week. Screwing with the tps sensor scares me a little because I'm not exactly sure what to do.

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
There are 2 screws holding it in place. the tps itself is slotted, which allows it to be turned (increasing or decreasing the resistance of the potentiometer). loosen both screws, and adjust it until your multimeter reads the correct resistance called out in the TSB. Subaru released a technical service bulletin (TSB) for the TPS because the FSM calls out the wrong resistance, IIRC.
It's not that big a deal to mess with it. It is easily located under the H-6 cover that covers the throttle body, and is on the left (driver) side of the assembly.

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
Unlocking the torque converter feels alot like a downshift, and can be caused by more things. Try a manual downshift to see if the rpm jump is the same if the TPS fix doesn't work.

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
Borrow one from a friend . I am sure someone you know has one (uncle, brother, dad, neighbor). They are fairly common. Or you could go harbor freight. A cheap one should be sufficient to do a quick test like the TPS.

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
Could be the brake band slipping/releasing, downshifting to third gear

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
Please for the love of god don't be the brake band, that's how My last tranny went. I don't know if it's just me being paranoid but this is just one of many problems I have been having lately. The other day I finally discovered the source of the constant squeaking noise coming from my brakes. my caliper sliders were completely frozen up so only the inside pads in the rear were making contact with the rotor. also a heater hose broke and almost made me blow my motor. I am going to deal with the tps this weekend.

Re: down shifting at 80 mph
My tranny was shifting in and out between 3rd & 4th, not all the time, but say 5-6 times on a 20 mile trip.
I cleaned the TPS. Marked its position with "white-out", removed it. Sprayed in a bunch of contact cleaner. Blew it dry w/compressed air. Re-installed it, and haven't had any hunting between 3rd & 4th since! Easiest fix I've done to this beast yet. I just ordered transfer clutch parts so I can get my rear-wheels driving again. After that, I'll be caught up, at least for a while! |

I've got a question. In case the TPS is okay, and I still don't have rear wheel drive, and I do need a new transfer clutch, does anyone know what size plates are needed? The guys at 1stSubaruparts.com, are telling me the system is asking for transfer plate thickness (3.3mm, 3.7mm, 4.1mm, or 4.5mm). I wanted to buy the parts before disassembly... Re: down shifting at 80 mph
You must disassemble the transfer clutch to obtain measurements...then order the plates. All clutch parts are "selective".
